gentoo failed to initialize graphics device.

i read this post

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...raphics+device

My kernel = 2.4.20-gentoo-r6

my /etc/modules.autoload.d file already have nvidia in it.

i can use the nv driver fine, however the nvidia crashes at startx.

here is the problem in /var/log/XFree86.0.log:

Code:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): ***Aborting***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(EE) Screens found, but none have a usable configuration.

Here is what my XF86Config looks like:

Code:

# This loads the DBE extension module.

Beyond this, I don't know what else to include to give greater insight to my problem. I would be extremely appreciative to anyone who might know how to fix this.

Thank you

try to emerge the driver using:
# emerge nvidia-glx

It worked for me then!

Cheers,
CLiff
