Please read the whole post befor answering, thanks :)
Okay, first the system specs: NVIDIA GeForce 4ti 4200 using NVIDIA's 1.0-5336 linux video driver XFree86 4.3.0 running KDE 3.2 I perfer to use 800x600 when running in KDE, but at 1024x768 when playing games in linux (NWN mainly, but a few others too) However, if I add 1024x768 to my list of usable resolutions in my XF86Config file, it starts up in 1024x768. If I switch manually to 800x600, then I get a vurtial desktop that is still 1024x768 even though I have virtual desktops disabled in my config file. Is there any way I can switch to 800x600 screen res (or better yet, start the X server in that mode) and NOT have a virtual desktop of 1024x768 Any help appriciated :) I have attached my XF86Config in case someone needs to look at it |
You could use the program "xrandr" which is installed if you use xfree86 4.3x. Using it you can switch resolutions. You need to start X at 1024x768 and using it you can switch to lower resolutions and back to 1024x768.

Easiest way I've found is to set the Mode line with the one you want as the default as the first in the list. Like:
Subsection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "800x600" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "640x480" ViewPort 0 0 EndSubsection Starts as 800x600 and virtual desktop of 800x600. You can then use the ctl-alt-+ to switch to the others. Set it the same in the other Depth sections too ;-) Give it a go and see if that doesn't work. |
