MDK 10 problems

Ok, I am on Mandrake 10 Community Edition (2.6.3-4) and I am starting to pull my hair out here.

I downloaded and installed the latest nvidia-driver I could found. (5341)
I've edited the XF86Config-4 as I always do.

I see the nvidia logo on X start up, but the acceleration is working _partially_!!!

Chromium (a 3d demanding shootem-up) runs fluently.
But watch this...
[alex@alkis t]$ glxgears
61 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12.200 FPS
60 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12.000 FPS
67 frames in 5.0 seconds = 13.400 FPS

And please watch this...
[alex@alkis t]$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.3
....
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce3/AGP/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 1.4.1 NVIDIA 53.41
....

I am suspecting that there is a problem with the tls directory in /usr/lib/ but I can't find a solution.

If you are still reading this here what ldd glxgears shows
[alex@alkis t]$ ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/glxgears
linux-gate.so.1 => (0xffffe000)
libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/tls/libGL.so.1 (0x4002a000)
libXext.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x40088000)
libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x40096000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0x40178000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x40188000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0x401ab000)
libGLcore.so.1 => /usr/lib/tls/libGLcore.so.1 (0x402f3000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x407a9000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)

What REALLY bothers me is that I can't find anything on google! I mean, I can't really be the _only_ mdk10 user with a gf3 and this problem...or can I?

Thanks for reading.
/Alex

Re: MDK 10 problems

This could be a case of TLS problems. See what I mean by searching this forum for TLS.

No. The situation is not that simple :-)

Chromium has 3d accel.
Neverball does not. Armagetron does not (I get 7 fps on this one).
My own OpenGL C++ project is crawling.

From xscreensaver atlantis runs on ~30fps (seems like its getting accel) but Bubble3D run ~6fps!!!

I can't seem to find a pattern :-(

for having acceleration with kernel 2.6.x you need to add to the /etc/modprobe.preload file the following line
agp_chipset
where chipset is your motherboard chipset (via, intel and so on...)
after this line you could add this line :
nvidia
in way the nvidia driver are loaded soonly to speed up the load of XFree...

Re: MDK 10 problems

My file state this line:
via-agp is this the same thing?

Re: MDK 10 problems

yes it's chipset_agp sorry for the error...

an other way to install easy NVIDIOUS driver automaticaly on a mdk 10.0 whithout proprietary installer installed

do a urpmi.addmedia rapsys ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/dist...ndrake/rapsys/ with ./hdlist.cz

and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-2.6-1.0-3phoenix.i586.rpm or NVIDIA-Linux-x86-2.6-1.0-4phoenix.i586.rpm
package with kernel-2.6.4-4phoenix-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

NVIDIA will work perfectly without to need to modify your XF86Config-4 file

(script does it automaticaly)

you need to wait a few time the mirror become up2date...

Re: MDK 10 problems

Are you gonna keep the package up to date?

Unfortunately my /etc/modprobe.preload already has the agp line. It has the following two lines:
scsi_hostadapter
intel-agp

But I get acceleration that works partially with the latest drivers.
I checked old drivers. 4620, seems to work for me.

I am almost certain that it has something to do with the 'tls' dir in the /usr/lib/
What still bothers me is how there are MDK10 users that don't have the problem. I can't figure that out...

I just bought myself a XFX GeFORCE FX5200 128MB and with my GeFORCE2 MX400 I was having ~820fps with glxgears and now I've got ~1025fps, it's not much. It is normal?

And in the game americas army I've got around 15~20fps in hospital :S @ 1024x768 detail normal.
