Mandrake 9 and GeForce 4 4400

Stock install display would only run as NV25 [GeForce4 Ti4400], Card:NVIDIA GeForce (fbdev). Would not run as generic GeForce 4 that works on Redhat 7.3. The XF86Config-4 file is much differant than the 2x cards

Section "Module"
Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension
Load "v4l" # Video for Linux
Load "extmod"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
Load "glx" # 3D layer
EndSection

Section "Monitor"

VertRefresh 50-70

Section "Device"

Downloaded and compiled the latest source RPMs. Will try them out and post the resalts.

Mandrake 9 and GeForce 4400

To be safe I changed the run level to 3, backed up the XF86Config-4 and changed the following

Section "Module"
# Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension
# Load "v4l" # Video for Linux
# Load "extmod"
# Load "type1"
# Load "freetype"
#Load "glx" # 3D layer
EndSection

Then I started X -OK (to test before I installed the nvidia rpms)

Then I installed the compiled rpms with -ivh
and changed

Section "Module"
# Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension
# Load "v4l" # Video for Linux
# Load "extmod"
# Load "type1"
# Load "freetype"
Load "glx" # 3D layer
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "NVidia"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce (fbdev)"
Driver "nvidia"
# Option "DPMS"
EndSection

loged out restarted X and changed to 1024x768 24 bit colour (only had 16 bit before) and all -OK

Will this procedure work for Mandrake 8.2 and with a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 ?

Source RPMs will work with any distro that supports rebuilding RPMs.

The nVidia drivers will work with any nVidia video card.
