Modeline problem: nvidia driver moved screen to the left

I have GeForce 2/MX 400and I'm using Gentoo Linux.
Before instaling 'nvidia' I've configured both console display (using SVGATextMode) and X (using XVidTune) to the same resolution (so I can between both console and graphic displays without monitor-reset-and-degauss).

After installing 'nvidia' my screen under X is moved to the left (about 4 or 8 pixels).
How can I configure 'nvidia' to use my old ModeLine ?

(ModeLine in /etc/X11/XF86Config is still the same one but 'nvidia' seems to be doing something wrong).

I could increase pixel clock and move the screen (for example using xvidtune) but then switching between console and graphics will produce screen flashing and degauss so my display will be unusable for a short while.

If anyone have some ideas what to do - I'll be gratefull for any help.

You need to build a modeline from the values you got from xvidtune. For example when you call the modeline 1024x768@85, you need to type that name for the resolution in the display section.

Further I don't recommend using SVGATextmode anymore as it won't work fine with recent cards anymore. Your gf2mx can still be used with it but that is more some sort of "accident" as the algorithm is still quite similar to old cards (read riva128). That screen moving sounds a little familiar to me. A few years ago when I started nvclock, similar problems appeared when nvclock was build using optimizations. Somehow because of that the screen moved a few pixels to the right (this happened when in X).

OK. thanks for help and very quick answer. But now I have more questions:

I was using SVGATextMode for a long time and I'm not familiar with FBdev.
Are there any problems with FBdev+accelerated NVidia?
How can I configure FBdev to use the same resolution for text consoles and X-server?
I remember that some time ago FBdev and accelerated NVIDIA were incompatible or something like that....

The only framebuffer driver that works "fine" with the Nvidia drivers is "vesafb". The other driver called "rivafb" is incompabitble with the nvidia drivers. The driver is very buggy, doesn't support recent nvidia cards and cause screen corruption.

So - SVGATextMode will be still in use on my PC.
What are the alternatives?
Is there a way to set text console custom refresh rate that is compatible with nvidia driver?

Unfortunately not. Perhaps Linux 2.6.x contains a Vesa3 compatible framebuffer driver, if that's the case you can set it to different refresh rates.
