AGP is disabled

2 Attachment(s)
Hi,

I am having problems getting AGP enabled. I have attached my xfree log and xf86config files. I have an nvidia GeForce FX 5700 and my motherboard is a MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R with a AMD 64 3200+.

Code:

uname -a
Linux amd64 2.6.5-gentoo-r1 #1 Sat May 1 12:10:46 GMT 2004 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Code:

/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card
Fast Writes:    Supported
SBA:            Supported
AGP Rates:      8x 4x
Registers:      0x1f000e1b:0x00000000

Code:

/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/host-bridge
Host Bridge:    PCI device 1106:3188 (VIA Technologies, Inc.)
Fast Writes:    Supported
SBA:            Supported
AGP Rates:      8x 4x
Registers:      0x1f000a1b:0x00000000

Code:

/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status:          Disabled

Code:

/proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0
Model:          GeForce FX 5700
IRQ:            11
Video BIOS:      04.36.20.21.00
Card Type:      AGP

Code:

/proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module  1.0-5336  Wed Jan 14 18:29:26 PST 2004
GCC version:  gcc version 3.3.2 20031218 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.2-r5, propolice-3.3-7)

Any ideas why AGP is disabled?

Re: AGP is disabled

I'm not sure if agpgart supports your via chipset in 32bit mode (yet). For sure the agp support built into the driver doesn't support it.

Re: AGP is disabled

Code:

deb-mick:~# /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
bash: /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status: Permission denied

Why?

Debian SID
Kernel: 2.6.4
Nvidia FX 5200
Driver nvidia: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1

Re: AGP is disabled

On some systems, users don't have permissions to access /proc

I think I have arranged something wrong in kernel or XF86Config-4? I do carry out as a root

Re: AGP is disabled

I mean file permissions on /proc those have nothing to do with the nvidia drivers.

Re: AGP is disabled

@Michel-pl: /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status is not an executable file, you'll need to use something like cat to access its contents.

Re: AGP is disabled

@ozster123: You can try building AGP support into the kernel, not as a module. Skip the XF86Config AGP setting as well. Does that work for you?

You have to use 'cat' to list the contents of those files.

eg:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

Then you will see it's output.

Re: AGP is disabled

In kernel 2.6.5 and newer I have had much more success with agpgart than with the nvidia agp driver. The best plan is to build agpgart as a module for the kernel, then experiment with both. I see much better results when I have agpgart and intel_agp loaded before starting X (which loads the 'nvidia' kernel module). Oddly, the 'agp disabled' problem shows up if I load the nvidia kernel module before starting x, or if I request nvagp via the X config option NvAGP.

This is a recent change for my system... it definitely has to do with the kernel version.

Re: AGP is disabled

That's exactly my experience. I ended up configuring AGP in-kernel and ditching NvAGP altogether and I have never looked back. ;-)

Re: AGP is disabled

Ok thanks. I don't use 'cat'.

Code:

deb-mick:~# cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card

Code:

deb-mick:~# cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

GCC version:  gcc version 3.3.3 (Debian 20040401)

My Debian (Mandrake and RedHat too) has stoped when I work in this system. Mouse has stop, keyboard has stop. How can I do it?

I can't do XF86Config-4

Please help me.
