nvidia driver crash when starting X

I have RedHat 9, XFree 4.3.0, GeForce 2 MX/AGP/SSE and nVIDIA 1.0-5336 driver.

Up until for a few days ago everything worked perfectly. When I booted the nVIDIA logo showed up and then the input prompt for gdm came. First the computer switches screen mode from textmode to the mode in which the logo is showed then it switches again to 1024x768 16 in which the prompt is shown. Then I changed DefaultDepth in Section "Screen" and Depth in SubSection "Display" in XF86Config from 16 to 24. Then everything went to hell. Now I can *sometimes* start it like before. In about 10% of the cases it works. But most of the time I only get a white screen when the nvidia logo is supposed to be shown. Sometimes only a segment of the screen is white and the other is black, it looks like the driver stops drawing the frame in the middle and then crashes. And I have to do a cold reboot because no ctrl+alt-kombinations is responding.

So first I tried to change the depth back to 16, but I still continued to get the white screen. Then I upgraded to 5336 which didn't solve the problem either. But changing driver from "nvidia" to "nv" worked, but ofcourse now I don't have any 3d acceleration. Fiddling with Option "NvAGP" hasn't solved my problem either. Beginning to worry that my card is fried.

So I don't know how to fix it. I'm out of ideas and need help. Below is the relevant sections of XF86Config

Re: nvidia driver crash when starting X

Post your complete XF86Config and the log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log probably) after you have changed the driver back to nvidia.

Here is the log (post-this.txt) and a log from when it starts properly (works.txt) and the config (XF86Config.txt). In roughly 10-20% of the cases X starts correctly but most of the time I get the error above. The reason I had "nv" above is because when i change back from "nvidia" to "nv" everything works but then I can't get any nice 3d. So I'm 100% sure it's something with the driver/3d card.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: nvidia driver crash when starting X

The config file itself looks ok. The only real difference I see is the resolution validating part. In the case it "works" you gave:
HorizSync 31.5 - 48.5
VertRefresh 50.0 - 70.0
And for the case it doesn't:
HorizSync 30 - 70
VertRefresh 50.0 - 130.0

Normally it doesn't really matter if the the values you entered are 100% correct as the drivers validate what you entered. As there's further no rreal difference I would investigate if this causes problems after all, so really use the correct refresh rates.

Further check if there are no errors in for example /var/log/messages.

Re: nvidia driver crash when starting X

The strange thing is that error seemed to come at totally random places. Or so I think because the logfile was cut off at unlogical places. Sometimes after "(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libfb.a" sometimes after all the "(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "1024x768" (hsync out of range)" lines, sometimes after "GetModeLine - hdsp: 1024 hbeg: 1048 hend: 1184 httl: 1344" which should be the last line that is written, sometimes after "(II) resource ranges after preInit:"...

It seems to be working now. Or I might be jinxing it by thinking so. Added: Option "NoLogo" "1"... Which would make this the stupidest error ever.
