Fast Writes & SBA - What are these things?

So, im having a loverly time installing my new asus v9980 (fx 5950 Ultra) :(

I've got about 2300 FPS on glxgears but I notice that i do not have Fast Write or SBA enabled. Should I have?

Code:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0
Model:          Unknown
IRQ:            19
Video BIOS:      04.35.20.36.00
Card Type:      AGP

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card
Fast Writes:    Supported
SBA:            Supported
AGP Rates:      8x 4x
Registers:      0x1f000e1b:0x1f004102

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status:          Enabled
Driver:          NVIDIA
AGP Rate:        8x
Fast Writes:    Disabled
SBA:            Disabled

Can anyone help me get on the right track please?

Many thx

Nick

Re: Fast Writes & SBA - What are these things?

Fast Writes and Sideband Addressing are two agp related features. In the past they were quite unstable but these days the options should work fine but they don't help performance very much.

Don't draw conclusions out of a glxgears test. It isn't really meant as a benchmark. If you get a score > 1000 (and you have a "good" videocard) then it basicly tells you if hw accelerated 3d is enabled. The score you get really doesn't say anything. Check performance in real games (quake3, ut2004 ..). If those games are playable then performance is ok at the moment. Don't compare your framerate with windows (yet) or with slower nvidia cards as the performance of the latest drivers sucks a bit on GeforceFX cards.

Thanks very much!

Actually, i just installed the newest drivers and X fails telling me that my "four pin power connector is not connected!" ----- and it clearly is...

Do you think I have a power issues here?

FYI,
one can enable sba and fastwrites using
"options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1 NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1"
in the /etc/modprobe.conf file (modules.conf for 2.4 kernel).
sorry have no idea with the power connector problem...

good luck!

Just make sure that the power connector you use is not shared by other devices and that the video card is the only device connected and nothing else. And make sure your PSU is at least around the 350-400 Watt mark.
I have a 5950Ultra as well, and I don't get that error. :)
