Help - Editing the XF86 file

I just got the nVidia drivers installed finally, after a couple whole days of trying to figure out what I was doing wrong (I'm new to Linux). All I have to do to the config file is change "nv" to "nvidia"; everything else is right. I edited the file, and it said that I don't have enough privileges when I tried saving it. How do you get those privilages? Also, do you have to do it without X running, or could you edit it through X and restart to update the changes?

\you must first switch to root user..(su) and you should be able to change the file.....you may change this while running X and then reboot and you should be the NVIDIA logo before X and your desktop manager begin... :)
