glxgears makes x to crash

Hi all,
I have problems with opengl issue...
I install successfully the latest nvidia driver in my Slack 9.1 with Xfree 4.3 and kernel 2.4.22; everything works fine, nvidia logo appears, nvidia module is loaded, agpgart is loaded too.
When I try something opengl related the problem start: if I do an "glxinfo" some strange disturbing lines appear on my monitor and If I try to run "glxgears" after few seconds the monitor freezes and my mouse and my keyboard don't respond...I have to restart the system...
I read the NVidia readme, I checked the symlink and lib and everything seems to be there, glxinfo says dri is running...
I've tried also redhat 9 and debian and I've got the same problem....In win I have no problem, so I think it's not a hardware issue.
My videocard is a Chaintech Nvidia GeforceFX 5700 128mb, my pc an AMD Athlon XP 2500+, mobo msi KT600
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Re: glxgears makes x to crash

Examine the logfile for mention of loading GLX, it sounds like the glx extension is failing to load.
A successful load should appear similar to below:

(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.5341
Module class: XFree86 Server Extension
ABI class: XFree86 Server Extension, version 0.1
(II) Loading extension GLX

(II) Loading extension NV-GLX

And this line should not be seen soon after:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX

Re: glxgears makes x to crash

I don't recognize any problems in the log.
Have you tried running nvidia's agp support rather than agpgart? This is controlled by the option "NvAGP" in the device section of the config.
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NvAGP" "1"

Check whether the option is rejected in the log, and cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status to see which driver is functioning.

Re: glxgears makes x to crash

Thanks for your advice, enabling nvidia AGP glxgeas now run fine, no more crash;)

Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 8x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Enabled

Anyway, I still have problem with Maya...how could I test my opengl to be sure that everything is fine ( I mean: there is something like glxgears) because right now I start to think that opengl itself is ok, but I have a problem with that application in paticular....If there is no more crash, glxinfo if ok, log is ok, agp is ok ( I hope), that's the only thing that I could think....
Thanks very much for your help!
Bye

Re: glxgears makes x to crash

glxgears is a very simple example of OpenGL, its purpose is only to show that the renderer is working and a relative speed it is capable of.. a benchmark or test suite it is not.

One good way to test out heavier load rendering is to install a game! Americas Army Ops is free.. OpenGL.. and yeah, also free. :) www.americasarmy.com (still not a test suite)

I don't know where you can get real cad quality test suites that will work. You might try installing and working with blender or another free modeler as well.
