Wild guess...
Goto http://www.minion.de/ and follow the instructions.
You may need to patch the driver to support the 2.6.x kernel.

I'm using the patched 44.96 drivers on all my 2.6.x based machines.

did you symlink your /usr/src/linux-2.6.6 to /usr/src/linux ? If not try it this way.

Re: nvidia 5536 driver on kernel 2.6.6, not working. please help me

The 5336 driver should support 2.6.6 without being patched (given REGPARM is not used).

ERROR: Unable to determine the NVIDIA kernel module filename.
-- you should have the current running kernel's source directory configured (and preferably not cleaned from the previous kernel build). If you cleaned the directory try the below..

-- go to your kernel source directory and make clean && make mrproper then copy the config file used for your current running kernel into the directory and make prepare. This should get the driver going... if not you may need to rebuild the kernel modules... and this time leave the source directory configured.

Re: nvidia 5536 driver on kernel 2.6.6, not working. please help me

I've experienced alot of system lockups and other weirdness with the 53.36 and 2.6.x series of kernels. I've finally given up and rolled back to the 53.28 drivers. They seem to be just as fast and don't cause my machine to hard lock.

I seriously doubt it's hardware because within the last 2 weeks, I've changed to a new motherboard and processor and a new power supply. My linux installation hasn't changed during the upgrade.

I had problems with Mandrake 10 Community release on kernel 2.6.3-x, and am experiencing issues again with kernel 2.6.6-2. Sometimes X will freeze and I can ssh in from another machine and reset it, sometimes X just will not start again. I realize the 2.6.x branch of kernels are super new and Nvidia doesn't do much of anything quickly (on the linux side) so I'm giving them a break here. As long as older drivers work predictably, I'll deal with it.

To summarize, if 53.36 is giving you problems, rollback.

For XFree86 v4.x the config file is /etc/X11/XF86Config (this is probably what you should use).
For X.org the config file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf (I don't think slack 9 would be using this).

slack + dropline gnome replaces the XF86 with x.org.

i knew what my X config file is, i was askin what file "then comp the config file used by your current kernel"
what file would that be and where is it?
i compiled the kernel in
/linux-2.6.6
and i extracted tha sources in2
/usr/src/linux and /usr/src/linux-2.6.6

BTW, before i copyed in 2 /usr/src/linux i deleated tha folder and recreated it.

well actually it is xorg.conf because i manually installed Xorg's X my self from X.org
