Why can't I probe my card?
Somewhat of a newbie. I have a quadro fx 1100, using the 5336 driver, with a Cornerstone p1750 21" monitor. The card seems to be working (I get the Nvidia spash screen), but I want to make sure the settings are all correct and optimized. What puzzles me is that redhat-config-xfree86 is unable to probe the card. Also, hwbrowser doesn't show the card. All I have done is edited the XF86Config file. How can I be sure the card is functioning the way it's supposed to? (One thing I would like to see is a sharper screen image with crisper text.)
Here is more info on my system:
Video card: quadro fx 1100
Distro: RH WS 3.0
Processors: 2x AMD Opeteron 242 (1.6 Ghz)
Motherboard: Iwill DK8X
Attaching /etc/X11/XF86Config and /var/log/XFree86.0.log.
Thank you very much for your guidance,
Re: Why can't I probe my card?
Your config mentions this being a PNY card, if that is true you may want to try the 5341 driver available here instead. It is labeled as FX 3000G only, however it does work quite well with other cards, my GeForce 4 included.
That driver can also be patched to fix some known issues, see www.minion.de.
The card is not identified correctly by the driver probe:
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation unknown chipset (0x034e) rev 161, Mem @ 0xfc000000/24, 0xd0000000/28, BIOS @ 0xfd8e0000/17
The chipset is however the correct version number (from the readme)
What puzzles me is that redhat-config-xfree86 is unable to probe the card. Also, hwbrowser doesn't show the card[quote]
This is perhaps not unusual. The 'probing' done by that program (which is actually done with a background script using python libraries specially for XFree86) can only identify cards it is aware of prior to the probe... i.e. there is a database of known chips for it to choose from, if it finds no match you get no probe. /sbin/lspci -v if it exists in RHEL (or cat /proc/pci if not) should show some information about the card -- this will be basically all the system knows about what the card is.
