Need help escaping Bill on a Toshiba Satellite P25

I am new to Linux. Was with OS/2 for years but finally gave into the windoz when switching to laptop. Would like to convert my P25 to Linux and kiss Bill goodbye again. Tired of the same old crash and burn BS microsoft has been hyping for years. Does anyone have suggestions as to this machine. I noted a few comments on it and it appears to be doable. I need somebody who could give a newbie some guidance. Which distro should i look at. Considering newest red hat also have last Mandrake around here.
Any suggestions please.
Thanks
Liam

For a total newbie, I think Mandrake is one of the more "user friendly" Linux distro's out there. The setup is really easy, and they've got good documentation.
At least for 9.1. I think they're already up to 10.1 beta, or the like.

Anyway, I saw this thing had no replies, so I thought to give one.

Mandrake is a good choice.. the latest official release is 10.0 which is very stable and easy to use. As far as a how-to I suggest just jumping in, the installation process is very good at setting up your machine correctly. Once you're up and running, you'll find that it's not too difficult to use coming over from Windows. I like using KDE desktop manager myself, although Gnome is another option. Choose the one you feel most comfortable with. You can also get a few doc files from mandrake that will show pretty much how to do everything you need to know from using all the included apps to running command line:

Unfortunately, the latest docs are from MDK 9.2, but not much has changed to 10.0 and it'll help you get a little familiar with the install process and such..

good luck!

Thanks for the comments thus far. Can't find my mandrake. Have red hat. Suse 9.1 is locally available. As for my main concern it is that this computer is mission critical for me and I can't afford much down time. Does anyone have any history with the toshiba line or specifically the p15 or p25 models? (aaa)
Thanks Liam
