3dmark03 crashing/rate my system

Hello all
I need some info. I have just download 3dmark03. And cannot run it. It will start with the first game demo, then crash. To 256 colour DT. The error will read" Microsoft Windows detected and recovered from a device fault". I ran this on the following system ( 3 weeks old). Rate it, this system is a standard setup at most computer shops here.
AMD2500+XP~1.8G
MS Windows XP
ABIT NF7 MB/w sound
Apollo FX 5600XT 256m
512 DDR 3200, 400 ram
Samsung 80G HD 7200
LG DVD Combo
350w PS
Does anyone have an idea? Why?
Thanks Dave

maybe your power supply isnt adequate, is it a generic PSU brand? IS the Nforce chipset drivers from Nvidia.com installed? Are you running 3dmark at the standard 1024x768 @ 32bit colors? Are the latest official 61.77 Nvidia video drivers installed?

As far as rating your system, I gave you a low rating but I should explain why... you picked an FX5600XT 256 which is possibly one of the most under powered cards you can buy. Not only is the memory and clock speeds slower than other 5600 cards, some 5600XT models have 64bit memory bus which is really bad. And I suspect you pick the card because it was a cheap 256mb card, but the problem there is the 256mb is just a gimick since the card is not powerful enough to really handle textures that need 256mb to begin with.

I recommend returning the FX5600XT for no less than an FX5900XT (preferably a 6800NU) and try overclocking that Barton2500 after you get the 3dmark issue resolved.

I agree with Gator on everything except the 6800NU. Yes, do away with the 5600. If you dont play many graphics intensive games, then the 5900 will work fine for you. If you play the newer games(Doom3), then skip the 6800 NU and go straight to the GT. Difference of 128 vs 256M RAM and 12 vs 16 pipelines. The $100 price difference between the NU and GT is worth it IMO.

If he purchased a 5600XT then we can assume he is on a strict budget. That's why I didn't even mention the 6800GT, because the 6800NU would already be stretching his budget. And the FX5900XT should be considered a bare minimum in this case. See my point?

The FX 5900XT is the best card for the buck in the FX line. it will knock the stuffing out of a 5600 Ultra. The 5900s are the only FX cards worth anything.
