Help a newbie to Linux install shell script !!!

I've been sitting here for 3 days trying to install the new NFORCE mainboard and Nvidia display drivers.

I have Suse 9.1 installed#

ASUS A7N8X-X mainboard and a Geforce FX 5600 XT 256 RAM Graphics card.

Can someone please walk me through installing shell scripts ?

When I open a command window and run it as root, typing in: 'sh NFORCE-Linux-x86-1.0-0283-pkg1.run' and hit return the command window disappears, and nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong ? (newb)

Hmm... can't you just (in the folder, where the script is)...

chmod +x NFORCE-Linux-x86-1.0-0283-pkg1.run
./NFORCE-Linux-x86-1.0-0283-pkg1.run

?

I finally got the installer to work, then this came:

No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; this means
that the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface.

I hit OK. Then this came:

ERROR: Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running
kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files
for your kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you
have the 'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct
kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source
path with the '--kernel-source-path' commandline option.

I downloaded some rpm's off the Nvidia ftp site:

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.mdk82up_2.4.18_6.athlon.rpm

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.mdk90up_2.4.19_16.athlon.rpm

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.rh73up_2.4.18_3.athlon.rpm

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.rh73up_2.4.18_3.athlon.rpm

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.rh73up_2.4.18_5.athlon.rpm

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.rh80up_2.4.18_14.athlon.rpm

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.rh80up_2.4.18_17.athlon.rpm

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.src.rpm

NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.suse81.i586.rpm

Do I need to install one of those or any of those ?

BTW: What is the X-server and how do I close it to install the graphics driver ?

I want to learn to do this stuff, I want to kill windows once and for all. Thanx for any help !

Only if one of those RPM's match YOUR kernel and distribution, then you can install it (type "uname -r" without quotes to see your version).

Otherwise install matching kernel sources. "uname -r" shows your kernel version, you can install the sources maybe from the CD of your distribution (you didn't mention it?) or by downloading them from the internet. Try "kernel" search to http://rpm.pbone.net and download the sources that match your kernel and distribution.

If you think you have the kernel sources already installed, try "ls /usr/src". The sources should be there and the link "linux" pointing to the source folder.
