ATI's "Big linux push"

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18664

Ha, that'll be the day. Even if ATI does manage to get where nVidia was two years ago, nVidia will be hot to trot with the Cairo/Glitz projects while ATI is still sucking their thumbs - like usual.

Re: ATI's "Big linux push"

One interesting item was their quote that 4% of their customer base are linux users...I wonder about the exact numbers of their customer base as well as similar figures for nvidia. Could be a good way to find out how many "serious" linux gamers/3d geeks/etc are really in existence.

Re: ATI's "Big linux push"

if ati concentrates only 4% of all their efforts to the linux base they are always going to be facing the wrath of users of alternative o/s's...

this is hardly the mindset one should employ when addressing the needs of their customers...

a positive step by ati in assigning more resources to nix driver development but perhaps a crash course in common sense might help out a little...

Re: ATI's "Big linux push"

There is a very notable perk to all this, if ATI acknowledges the Linux market has gone to %4, and they adjust resources accordingly, then they will have increased their Linux development resources by %300

(rofl2)

Anyone remember the joke about the Yugo, ie how do you double its value? You fill it up with gas. I think the same type of anecdote applies to the ATI Linux team. "We have massively increased our resources to our Linux team, we hired 2 more guys...."

Hopefully this is a good thing for ATI users trying to run linux (I used a 9800pro in linux not too long ago), but I guess we'll just have to see...

Not to mention that when ATI gets their linux driver development together it will push companies like Nvidia to make even better ones than they currently have. Competition is something working for you and not against you like some zealots think.

Re: ATI's "Big linux push"

nVidia will likely have a mono implementation accompanying their drivers, which will be really cool

Hey competition can only be a good thing for us. ATI has a lot of work ahead of them to make up the ground they've conceded to nVidia in recent years... Maybe they've realised that the majority of 3D workstations aren't running WinXP. :-)

Tell me about it..
Here we run maya under linux for important work that needs to be done, and maya for windows for all the rest..
