Oh yea... text ;)

'First person shooters since Half-Life, at least on the pc, have been unsatisfying footnotes to the events of 1998. A smattering of ideas have crashlanded in the ballpark, but everyone is still playing the same game. We've seen better special effects, even some new material to work with, but there's still been a sense of deflation with each new title. Nothing on the pc has quite managed to repeat the fine melody with which Half-Life was orchestrated. But first person shooters haven't become outmoded, they've not even lost their way. They've simply not managed to do what we thought they could do. Half-Life 2, on the other hand, does exactly what we thought they could do. Those unrealised visions of intensity, action, drama and relentless challenge weren't just a figment - Valve knew that. The genre still has a way forward and the Seattle team has found it. Yes, it's a linear shooter: a magnificent, breathtaking paragon of the form. Half-Life 2 takes squad based elements, the vehicles, the physics, the gorgeous good looks, the whole sedimentary block of genre conceits and carves out a masterpiece. This isn'tabout doing things differently to anyone else, it's about doing them better.

How is this possible? Well, it's largely about timing. The set-oieces are, almost without exception, supremely effective. A giant strider tripod crashing through a building, a zombie bursting through a door, a floating barrel counterbalance puzzle, a duel with a helicopter, a line uttered by an otherwise inconsequential character - whatever it is, it comes barelling in, pitch perfect t the very second of delivery. And it never stops, Half-Life 2 never lets up: it's a high bandwidth cascade of challenges. There is no time for repetition or monotony. The sheer urgency with which the player is propelled through the game sees to that. Few games have such a qualified sense of drama. Half-Life 2 tells a story in which you are swept along without feeling helpless.

The intensity of chase scenes, the gut-wrenching loss of friends, the grim brutality of killing - all these experiences are delivered with astomishing vitality. The characters win hearts and raise suspicions. The acting, their movement, their facial expressions, all seem imbued with humanity. The city itself, awe-inspiring, oppressive and terrifying in equal measure, is flawlessly designed. You are embedded in this world.

And no, Gordon Freeman never speaks. No cut-scenes, no muttered voice voiceover. This seemingly sinister quirk is elegantly handled, gently transformed into a joke by the other characters. Alyx, the core female character, laughs and shakes her head, while Yoda-type aliens mutter things in their own language after informing the player, politely, that they would only ever speak in thei native tongue if they wished to say something rude.

All of this birlliance takes place within a framework of sensational technical achievement. The source engine might not have Doom3's fearsome lighting, but it nevertheless believably renders everything from a vast brutalist skyscraper t the peeling paint of a tenement wall. The striders, the towering tripedal robots that hunt the army of rebels along the streets, are wonderful to behold. Death occurs on numerous occasions simply from the awesome need to look and gape. Even in the large outdoor spaces, such as the high-speed journey along a temperate coastiline, Source remains unfazed. There are a few examples of textures being too stretched and bland, but the naysayers who are liable to worry about this will have bigger things on their minds ... such as the physics.

Finally we have a game in which physics is more than and excuse for ragdoll deaths. Gone is the Mr Mango effect of running around banging into things and knocking them over. This time the world is there to be grasped. Within moments of Halif-Life 2's opening scenes a viscious metrocop throws a drink can on the floor and insistes that you pick it up and put in in the bin. In that moment the player is equipped with everything they need to know about the world. And these moments continue - the game constantly teaches us something and then presents the challenge to be overcome by applying what has been learned.. This is never more true than in using the gravity gun. This is the core tool, and it's what makes Half-Life 2 simple sing with entertainment.. It can be used to drag objects, pick them up and carry them about, throw or smash them away. The applications for this spreads wide indeed.. Initially, it's about hurling metal disks through the bodies of encroaching zombies: later it find an application knocking over the buggy and getting it upright, or dislodging weird sticky mines, or picking up a filing cabinet to use as a sheild or a battering ram. Tearing a radiaotr off a wall and using it to swat a parasitic headcrab, is truly gaming epiphany. This is possibly the most exquisitely crafted action game of all time (*I love that line *)

Half-Life 2 is a first person shooter. But in action, storytelling, technical achievement, atmosphere and intensity it has far outdone its peers. Valve just hit the top note no other pc game developer could reach. [10]'

Re: Another Review

Give it up Jakup, you know the game doesn't exist. There is no "Half-life 2", all these reviews are fake. They're just trying to majorly hype something to sucker unsuspecting people into believing that there's some great game coming out, and then on release day reveal that the game doesn't exist to drive thousands of geeks into commiting suicide. And every time you make another thread on the issue, you slowly become more and more likely to turn into one of those suicidal geeks.

Sorry, couldn't resist after seeing 10 topics on the first page alone started by you. Maybe we should have a "is Jakup overly obsessed with HL2" poll :D

Anyway though, anyone else think it's kinda funny that they always add in the scores for Doom 3 and Farcry when they reveal what the score for HL2 was? Comparing games is one thing, but it's almost like they're saying "look, this game is better than these other games!". I mean, I don't remember any Half-life 1 reviews saying "This game got 96%, Quake 2 got 89% and Unreal got 92%"

Re: Another Review

96% is a jolly good score old chaps :D
Obessing over HL2 is perfectly natural

Re: Another Review

Edge, because some magazines/editorial offices are more critical when reviewing games than others. In some websites, its normal for them to give 96% scores one time per month and 90% scores many times per month, while others give a 96% score every 4 years or something.. I think thats why, they want to emphasize that they are not giving these kind of scores everyday by giving Doom3 and Far Cry as example for lower scores than HL2. I don't think they intend to compare these games' quality and making Far Cry and Doom3 look like crap, as I said they properbly just want to emphasize the rarity of their HL2 score :)

Re: Another Review

True, it is nice to have something to put it in perspective with, but why do they compare review scores NOW when they haven't in the past? HL2 is the only game where every review score I've seen for it has been compared to scores for other games, no articles about reviews have previously had any extra review scores thrown into the mix (unless you looked them up yourself). I'm not questioning the relevence of it, just the occurence of it.

Re: Another Review

Because the of the big question.... everyone wants to know, whats better, doom3 or halflife2??! These are the 2 biggest games in a long time, so everyone compares it. (and they came out at about the same time) I can remember with quake3, people were comparing UT.

Re: Another Review

Please, JakUp... everyone knows that Doom 3 is sooo last week. The comparison of the month is HL2 vs Halo 2! Because we all know that comparison makes more sense.

;)

Re: Another Review + Scans!

jakUp is tha man. It's funny on one of the scans where they do the "Stress Tests" and compare different video cards. I could have sworn that NVIDIA beat ATI on this thing? Now "Ze GerMans" say that ATI beats NVIDIA by 2 FPS? Are we sure that's right? Hmmm. Nice find, can't wait. GTA:SA is going to hold me over for sure.

Why are there 2 great big Far Cry shots in this thread? :wtf:

Nice scans, pity I can't understand it. I am digging that comparison thing btw Far Cry, Doom 3 and HL2. I would like to read some of those interviews with Marc Laidlaw. Nice pics in scans :drooling:
