Undefined Device Error - Can't startx

Hi,

I'm running RH 7.3 kernel 2.4.18-5.

I installed the latest NVidia kernel and glx modules from the tarball packages successfully, and then made the changes to my XF86Config-4 file as outlined in the documentation. This was done yesterday.

After I did all of that, I started X, and got the NVidia splash screen. Everything seemed to be working well. No problems at all. Then I shut down the machine. When I booted up today and tried to startx, I got nowhere. Errors are:

Module Loader present
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Wed Aug 7 09:52:26 2002
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Undefined Device "nvidiactl" referenced by Screen "Screen0".
(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

Fatal server error:
no screens found

My original XF86Config-4 file had the following entries for device:
Section "Device"
# no known options
Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX (generic)"
Driver "nv"
VendorName "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX (generic)"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX (generic)"

#BusID
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX (generic)"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16

Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

I changed entries to:
Section "Device"
# no known options
Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX"

#BusID
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "nvidiactl"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16

Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

Yesterday when X was working after the install, the only things I had changed in the config-4 file was the driver name from 'nv' to 'nvidia', and to remark out the load Glcore and load dri sections.

I have attached a file called 'Xfiles.zip which contains two different XFree86.log files, and three XF86Config-4 files. The XF86Config-4 file is my current one, the XF86Config-4.bak file is the original (before install), and the XF86Config-4.xconfigurator file is the one created when I tried to run Xconfigurator to no avail. That didn't work either, and when it tried to probe my video card, it said it couldn't probe it.

Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks,

David

This part is incorrect:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "nvidiactl" <--- needs to be the identifier of the device section to use
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16

Change "Device" = "nvidiactl" to "Device" = "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX"

You're right. I fixed it finally..

Thanks for the tip though.

David
