unable to start x on non primary video card
i have 2 nvidia video cards, one agp and one pci, bith supported by the 7167 drivers.
if i set the agp card as the primary vga device in the bios and then try to start a simple X session on the pci card, which is the only x session, this fails wth this error message NVIDIA: Could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/Output Error) likewise if i set the pci card as the primary vga device in the bios and then try to start a simple X session on theagp card, which is the only x session, this also fails wth this error message NVIDIA: Could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/Output Error) i have no problem starting an x session on the primary vga device, but this is not what i want. i have tried using the Option "UseInt10Module" "1" without sucess any pointers on what i am doing wrong, or is this a bug in the driver ? |
Re: unable to start x on non primary video card
Likely there are some messages in your system logs about the drivers not being able to initialize your adapters. Please check those and also run the nvidia-bug-report.sh script. And perhaps lspci -v gives some usefull info too.

here is the bug report and the log file
note that i am only trying to start 1 xserver...the one on the pci card the bug report includes the xserver log for the agp card...which works fine but if i put the pci card as the primary vga device, the agp card wont start correct, i have a seperate post that relates to starting two xservers at once, which has had no useful solutions...but i decided to start a seperate job as now all i want to do is start 1 xserver, and it wont start quite simple stuff i would have thought. any suggestions welcome. |
