Quadro FX 4500 virtual screen size limit?

Hi everyone,

I have the FX 4500 connected to a pair of Apple 30" monitors (no SLI) and when I try to run it at dual 2560x1600 resolution (5120x1600) the 1.0-7676 driver complains about a hardware virtual screen size limit of 4096. This is under Suse 9.3. The setup works fine under XP at the 5120x1600 resolution. Is the 4096 limit adjustable?

Thanks,
Imre

I'm afraid that limit is not adjustable at this time. In the future it may be.

What you can do is setup two X screens, and then tie them together with Xinerama.

Thanks,
Lonni

Could we please have that limit extended? Although Xinerama does work, twinview was more stable. Just upgraded from 1920x1200 + 1600x1200 in tvinwiew to 2560x1600 + 1600x1200 in Xinerama. The previous setup had much fewer crashes.

The 4096 limitation was eliminated in the 1.0-8756 driver which was released a few weeks ago.

Thanks,
Lonni

That is very strange, because this is what I get in my log:

(II) NVIDIA X Driver 1.0-8756 Wed Mar 29 15:15:38 PST 2006

(II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Devices: DFP-0, DFP-1
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "2560x1600,1600x1200"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 4160 x 1600
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen width of 4160 pixels is too large; clamping to
(WW) NVIDIA(0): 4096
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode "2560x1600,1600x1200" is larger than virtual size 4096 x
(WW) NVIDIA(0): 1600; discarding mode
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failure to construct a valid mode list: no modes remaining.

The complete log file is attached, but as far as I can tell the lines above are the important ones.

Please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 5

and then generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

Re: Quadro FX 4500 virtual screen size limit?

Thanks for the bug report. It wasn't initially clear that you were using TwinView. The 4096 limit was removed for Xinerama, however this limit is a hardware limit for TwinView. A future GPU will increase the limit to 8k (from 4k).

Thanks,
Lonni

Has the 8800GTX or the Quadro 5500 card solved this problem?

Re: Quadro FX 4500 virtual screen size limit?

G80 based cards have an 8192x8192 limit. Anything earlier than G80 (including the Quadro FX 5500, which is G71) is 4096x4096.
