pretty unexciting changelog after 4 months? e.g. still no nvidia-settings support for twinview, no possibility to set primary monitor, etc.

and glx still crashes composite extension.

Re: 1.0-8174 for Linux x86 released

Enhancements to nvidia-settings will be provided in a future driver release. I don't believe that any NVIDIA employees stated that 1.0-8174 would contain such enhancements.

Fixes for the composite extension's support in the nvidia driver are also planned for a future driver release. Please keep in mind that many compositor issues are not nvidia driver bugs, but rather X bugs, or window manager bugs.

If you're experiencing specific issues that you believe to be an nvidia driver bug, please generate and submit a bug report along with instructions on how the issue can be reproduced.

Thanks,
Lonni

Have you actually tried it or are you just threadcrapping for fun? It sounds like twinview is probably what would go in nvidia-xconfig. And composite is still experimental hence it's not nVidia's problem if it doesn't work at the moment. They're not going to waste time fixing it (assuming it's a problem with the drivers at all) and then have Composite change and break the fix again.

I for one am happy to see this release at last. Might be time to buy another 6600GT and go SLI...(xmasgrin)

The changelogs are never really complete. FBO was completely busted in 7676 and its fixed in this release. Who knows how many more things were fixed.

don't get me wrong, i'm sure you guys do a great job, but mentioning the html version of a readme and added man-pages as release highlights of a major driver release? come on, that's just not the support i expect when buying hardware for 300 bucks (even if i've seen far worse from other hardware vendors).

as for the composite extension: is there a safe way i can find out if the crash is because of the driver or the x-server?

looks like the twinview-settings are part of nvidia-xconfig. although as long as there is no good frontend available (maybe a kde-control-center module), it's just as useful as a readme file. still missing the primary monitor option, which was confirmed to be added in a later driver release, though (i just imagine a windows driver without the ability to set the primary display....so much for "unified driver")

that's true i'm not complaining about this one, but it would be a cool thing (TM) nonetheless.

Re: 1.0-8174 for Linux x86 released

Composite for me seems fixed: Ie, moving transparent windows doesn't crash the x-server anymore. Good!

Bad: The issue with subpixel hinting is still borked. See
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...t=44317&page=3

Keep in mind, turning renderaccell off, hinting is *correct* - making my fonts crisper on my LCD, but 2d is very slow. (With Renderaccell on and using current rc xorg, 2d is still fast...) Please fix the subpixel hinting issue. This is known since months and one of the few things which really annoys me and probably other people who care for serious and fast desktop usage.
