2.6.x kernel x86_64 and nforce 3 chipset boot problems

Hi all,

I have a Gigabyte K8nSC-939 (nForce 3 chipset) with a AMD64 3200+ processor. 32 bit Suse 10.0 installs and runs fine. As does 32 bit FC4. But the x86_64 versions of either are a bit of a pain to install and or to get to run. FC4 is a little easier to install using the "noapic nolapic" options. Installing Suse is a little more difficult but it can be done with a safe options install and rebooting to a safe options install, aborting the install, then continuing the install via the boot installed system option. That method usually works. If not repeat and it probably will.

My questions though are. IS there a "fix" for this? I was hoping the 2.6.14.x FC4 kernel fixed this. It doesn't. Is this an APIC problem and or a lack of support for the nForce 3 and 4 chipset in the 2.6.x kernel? What other problems will disabling APIC lead to?

All of this sounds like BIOS or kernel problems.

Hi Lonni,

I asked Gigabyte about this and the person that replied seems to think it's an nVidia driver problem. I have NOT modified amd74xx.c as outlined in the known problems text for the nVidia driver. I will give that a try though.

I have a question about those changes however. The amd74xx.c from the 2.6.13.x or 2.6.14.x have a couple of devices that aren't listed in the mod. Namely NFORCE_MCP51_IDE and NFORCE_MCP55_IDE. Should I leave those or comment them out?

Did Gigabyte state which nvidia driver they feel is at fault, and why?

To answer your question, an nForce3 motherboard wouldn't have MCP51 or MCP55 chipsets on it, so you shouldn't need anything that references them.

Thanks,

Lonni,

Gigabyte didn't say what driver they thought was causing this problem.

However, I think I figured out what causes this. When I upgraded to the AMD64 board. I had 2 PC2700 DIMMS in the older board, 1 is double sided and the other is single sided. The K8NSC-939 doesn't like that so 1 DIMM, either single sided or double sided, is all I could use. So it had single channel memory. I've recently put 2 PC3200 DIMMS in this board. Guess what? I no longer need to use the noapic nolapic kernel options in order to get it to boot normally.

I don't know if this is "normal" or if it's something in the kernel and or BIOS that causes it to happen with single channel memory.

Hopefully all my time spent trying to figure this out will be of some use to others.
