8174 on Toshiba Satellite with ACPI "legacy free"

My previous thread was partially repaired with NVreg_Mobile=1 (weird, 1=Dell)
But i get the black bar now, no matter what.
Seems that 8174 does not detect things.

Here's the pertinent parts from Xorg log 8174...

(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU detected as: GeForce4 440 Go
(--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 04.17.00.41.c5
(--) NVIDIA(0): Interlaced video modes are supported on this GPU
(II) NVIDIA(0): Detected AGP rate: 4X
(--) NVIDIA(0): VideoRAM: 32768 kBytes
(II) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s): DFP-0, TV-0
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Multiple displays connected, but only one display allowed;
(WW) NVIDIA(0): using boot display
(--) NVIDIA(0): DFP-0: maximum pixel clock: 108 MHz
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Failure reading FlatPanel flags for DFP-0.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Frequency information for DFP-0:
(II) NVIDIA(0): HorizSync : 29.000-65.000 kHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): VertRefresh : 0.000-60.000 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): (HorizSync from EDID)
(II) NVIDIA(0): (VertRefresh from EDID)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Adding EDID-provided mode "1372x1050" for DFP-0.
(II) Loading sub module "int10"
(II) LoadModule: "int10"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux/libint10.so
(II) Module int10: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 6.8.99.903, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.8
(II) NVIDIA(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
(II) NVIDIA(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 29.00-65.00 kHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 0.00-60.00 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Clock range: 12.00 to 108.00 MHz

And here's from Xorg log with 7667...

(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU detected as: GeForce4 440 Go
(--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 04.17.00.41.c5
(--) NVIDIA(0): Interlaced video modes are supported on this GPU

(II) NVIDIA(0): monitor1: Using vrefresh range of 59.00-75.00 Hz

Clock rates not detected.

Any answers???
thanks,

Please start X with the following command:
startx -- logverbose 6

and then generate and post a bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

1 Attachment(s)
Ok then , got everything working. I hadda force a modeline. Used "umc 1400 1050 124000000 -x" and changed to "-Vsync".

Composite and Render work also.
Seems clock is still not properly detected, but forcing DVI timings in xorg.conf did the trick.

I'm also relieved that those with a troublesome Toshiba notebook are getting their stuff to work... Thanks for all your help Lonni.

Re: 8174 on Toshiba Satellite with ACPI "legacy free"

Thanks to everyone who posts on this forum, it's the best source for anyone who uses Linux/Nvidia.

Still haven't found good modelines for anything less that 1400x1050, but i'll keep digging.

Older Nvidia drivers DID find the correct clock/dot/DVI/cheeseburger-and-fries numbers, wonder why 8174 doesn't (and why it needs to be set to Mobile=1)???

There are many many Toshiba users out there and I hope the Nvidia gurus can work things out for us in the future.

Many thanks,
The Doctor

Make your own modelines:
http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl

> nvidia: `~0' invalid for parameter `NVreg_Mobile'

You have now used a invalid parameter or quotes and it works?

> HorizSync 29.0 - 150.0

Your LCD can really 150 kHz?...

> /proc/cmdline

Your drives hda/hdc runnung with 33MHz PCI bus and UDMA100/33 modes, no PIO... and an development 2.6.15-rcx kernel in use, tse tse... ;)

Disable it with the cmdline for faster boot time.

'gtf' ships with just about every Linux distribution, and allows you to easily generate modelines.

I've been using umc http://umc.sourceforge.net/ and it works fine as long as one enters the dot clock.

pzgren: 2.6.15-rcx have been working very well. PCI bus in this machine is 66mhz. And what is it that you think i should do in Lilo about hda?

Re: 8174 on Toshiba Satellite with ACPI "legacy free"

I made a stupid mistake in not looking closely enough at xorg log.
It seems that my comment in my xorg.conf was wrong, and that my "1400x1050j" did not work because 8174 thought the clock was too high.
"1400x1050h" was the one loading, for it's modeline was set to clock of 97.

I have still the problem of dot clock NOT being detected properly, so i made a new modeline that uses the 8174 "detected" maximum of 108.

Now I have 1400x1050 and 108Mhz dot clock, which gives refresh of 53.

53 is 11% less than 60hz that this lcd should be.

Any answers on fixing dot clock detection???

What I mean is, you gain nothing with this setting for PIO, when using good UDMA modes. Try sdparm/hdparm.

You can turn ide1, ide2, ide3,... all off to save time for checking in you boot loader:
kernel ... ide1=noprobe ide2=noprobe ...

don't forget to run lilo after that changes in lilo.conf...

Please remove IgnoreEDID from xorg.conf, and then start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and generate and post a bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni
