Quake4 and RIVA TNT2 Model64
Received Quake4 for a Christmas present, and installed it on
my Sony Vaio PC running Windows XP SP2 ( home edition)
512M memory, and a RIVA TNT2 Model64 video card with
32M of memory.

The install went smoothly, no errors or warnings, howver
when I click on Quake4, and try to run it, my screen blanks
for 3-5 seconds, and my Windows desktop re-appears.

Quake4 requires updated video drivers that support
ActiveX9.0c, which comes with the Quake4 cd.

Does my video card support ActiveX9.0c ?

In searching the archives I found a thread on someone
asking for the person to run DXdiag. <snip below>

It appears that I have the DXdiag in multiple locations on my PC, but
I ran the DXdiag that was located in my c:\WINDOWS\system32\

I am assuming this is a video card issue.
Are there newer drivers that I should try to download or
should I just buy a newer video card ?

Thank you

Here is the DXdiag snip

Re: Quake4 and RIVA TNT2 Model64
The card you have there is over 6 years old. It supports only to directx7 not directx9. I am afraid you are going to have to buy a new graphics card. I would reccommend a 6600gt if you want something in agp or pci express for around $120.

Re: Quake4 and RIVA TNT2 Model64
I have no idea why it would say you need DirectX, Quake4 uses OpenGL. Download the latest nvidia drivers and see if that works. Keep in mind though your graphics card is NOT supported by Quake4 so it may be seeing your graphics card and quitting.

Re: Quake4 and RIVA TNT2 Model64

Any idea as to where I might find the latest driver ?
Looking at the archived drivers list on the nvidia web page,
Which one is it ?

I would like to load the latest drivers, before I go out and buy
a new vidoe card.

Thanks for the help !

Re: Quake4 and RIVA TNT2 Model64
It appears the latest drivers I could install is 66.93_win2kxp_english,
which was published in Nov, 2004. I tried to download the next two releases,
71.84 and 71.89, no luck...

Think I am back to looking for a new video card.

Re: Quake4 and RIVA TNT2 Model64
even if your card supported dx8 or 9 it doesn't support t&l=transform&lighting, look for a newcard, think about a pci-express....if you have the $$$ for it, it means getting a new cpu&probably ram....and psu, most pci-e mobo aren't happy unless they have a 400 watt default psu with as close to 30w on the main 12v rail, you could get an entry level setup for $250-300 minus the card, 6600gt pci can be had for close to $100 btw.

Re: Quake4 and RIVA TNT2 Model64
haha, man i thought this thread was a joke at first. with only a 1.7ghz and 512mb don't even bother spending money a new video card. play quake3 or some older games instead.

Re: Quake4 and RIVA TNT2 Model64
Q4 on my girlfriend's rig (1.5 GHz P4, GeForce FX 5700, 512 MB RAM) is at least playable at 800x600 and low details. If he can't afford a new rig, an AGP GeForce 6600 GT and another 512 MB of RAM would be a huge help.
