XVideo performance degradation with 8178

I have an MSI 6200 card. When I upgraded to driver 8178, I noticed a signification performance degradation with XVideo. Mythtv playback of HD content stutters with 8178, where it was handled easily with 7676.

Also, enabling "sync to vblank" in nvidia-settings (which is the default) still hangs the system when using the XVideo system in 8178. I was hoping that would be fixed.

Re: XVideo performance degradation with 8178

In addition to providing a bug report, please point me to some HD content that illustrates the stuttering.

Also, sync-to-vblank hanging the system is not a known bug. Please provide details on how that can be reproduced.

Thanks,
Lonni

Re: XVideo performance degradation with 8178

The sync-to-vblank bug is trivial to reproduce. With my 6200 card connected using the tvout, at 1080i resolution, running "mplayer -vo xv" on any file will hang the system with a black screen.

For more information, this is discussed on this forum here http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=55064 and here http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...ghlight=kraney

Re: XVideo performance degradation with 8178

For the xv performance issue, I'll need to update to 8178 to be able to produce the bug report log. I'll do that as soon as I am able.

I can try to post a link to some HD content, but the problem is not specific to any particular HD content. Every show I have recorded in mythtv exhibits the performance problem.

HD video is big, so I don't think I can attach it here. Is there a preferred way to get it to you?

Re: XVideo performance degradation with 8178

You could post the HD video to a website where I could download it.

For the hang, please generate a bug report before starting X, so that any logged errors will be captured.

Thanks,
Lonni

OK, I installed 8178 again and generated bug report files.

This is a bug report while playing back MPG using the XVideo extension that exhibits the performance problem.

I will private message you a URL to the MPG I used to reproduce the problem.

I generated this bug report by running sleep 10 && nvidia-bug-report.sh, then using the xvmc extension. In theory, it grabbed its data while I was looking at a black screen of death.

An interesting behavior I noticed this time was, I was able to change virtual terminals out of X windows after getting the black screen, but the system still hung completely after that.

Re: XVideo performance degradation with 8178

The performance problem is known bug 204753.

Thanks,
Lonni

I got this bug report after the XvMC hang, after rebooting but before starting X. (Just in case the timing was off in the previous one...)

What was the first driver version in which you experienced the XvMC hang? Are there any versions in which you have not experienced it?

Also, what kind of motherboard and BIOS version are you using?

It also wouldn't be a bad idea to update your system with all the latest FC4 updates.

Thanks,
Lonni

Sorry, in the above posts, where I say "XvMC", substitute sync-to-vblank.

Based on the cx88, I'd say those messages concern my pcHDTV card. They seem to occur when things are working, also.

I've had this problem with all versions I've tried with my MSI 6200 card. IIRC, I started with whatever version first listed the 6200 as a supported card. I have a GeForce Ti 4200, it worked fine with that exact same driver & settings (except using VGA, not TV out) when I temporarily swapped it into the system.

The motherboard is an Albatron KX400-8x with a AMD Athlon 2600+ processor. I'm not sure of the BIOS version.

My FC4 OS is no more than a couple of weeks out of date. There was a kernel update within the past few days I don't have, nothing else that seems relevant. I've had the same problem with several kernel revisions over the past couple of months since I installed the card.

I shouldn't have said XvMC, had a brain fart, the hang is when "sync to vblank" is on for video texture adapter.

XvMC doesn't work either, BTW, but I just get a black screen, it doesn't hang the system.
