Getting Nvidia to work on KDE 3
I have Mandrake 9.0 and have installed the nvidia rpms. Everything works fine on the Gnome desktop, but programmes will not run on KDE. The icon appears on the task bar and dies after about 30 secs.

Is anyone able to help.

Run the affected program from a terminal instead of clicking on the icon. That way, you'll get an error message rather than just having it die.

Post the error message you get.

Still having problems
Thanks for your reply. I was using tuxracer to test the nvidia drivers. I ran tuxracer in a console and received the following message "Error: Could not open /dev/nvidiactl because the permissions
are too restrictive. Please see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
section of /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README for steps
to correct."

I edited the "/etc/security/console.perms" and removed the line with "<dri>", however the system completely crashed. So I had to go in in failsafe and restore the line. So am back to where I started. Do you have any sugestions.

Did it completely crash immediately after you saved? That would be ... well ... really odd. I'm not very sure how PAM works and what it does, though, so yeah.

If you uninstall the PAM packages, might that help? Which distro is this? If Mandrake, there's a software manager program that you can use to uninstall the packages; if RedHat, there may be something similar, but I'm not sure.

It may suffice to just chown and chmod the /dev/nvidia* files, as well -- I'm not quite sure how often the PAM daemon thingy (I'm assuming it's a daemon, I guess it may not be) runs.
