New AGP Mobo with ULi 1695 Chipset = No more gfx accelration :(

Bought a new motherboard that supports AGP and PCI-E (Asrock 939-Dual SATAII)

I spent close to $400 recently on an AGP graphics card and it won't work using the native nvidia linux driver and there is no agpgart support.

Seeing as you (nVidia ) now own ULi, is there a chance of support for customers with those chips?

I don't want to have to sell this nice new card and buy a PCI-E one so soon after getting this.

Thanks,
Phil.

What does "it won't work using the native nvidia linux driver" mean?

Please post a bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

Re: New AGP Mobo with ULi 1695 Chipset = No more gfx accelration :(

Sorry Lonni,

"it won't work using the native nvidia linux driver" means I can log in to my desktop but it is slow and there is no hardware acceleration.

phil@philsbox:~$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Disabled

AGP initialization failed, please check the ouput
of the 'dmesg' command and/or your system log file
for additional information on this problem.

As far as I am aware this is because there is no support for the ULi 1695 North Bridge chipset built in to the 8178 x86 Linux graphics driver. I'm trying to use a 6800GT AGP.

Thanks,
Phil.

You don't need AGP support to use the glx X module, the two are mutally exclusive functionality.

Are you saying that there's no in-kernel agp support for that chipset either such that you could set NvAGP=2 ?

Please provide an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

1 Attachment(s)
I mean to say that it requires the linux "agpgart" driver in order to run at any decent speed and the "nvagp" "1" option is not used.

I have managed to fix the problem below by compiling the linux agpgart driver as a module instead of directly linking it into the kernel.

Bug report attached but I doubt it's of much use - if there's no support for the ULi 1695 chipset, I would have thought you guys might know about that already?

Thanks,
Phil.

NvAGP does not support this chipset, please see the README for a list of supported chipsets. With respect to the bug report, it would be helpful to see one generated when the problem reproduced. If I understand your correctly, you said that AGP initialization failed before you rebuilt AGPGART as a loadable kernel module, and that this was the only change you made to your system.

Hi,

I have the same board.

Compile the agpgart support into the kernel, and it will just work. There is no need to use the NvAGP or to make the agpgart support modular.

Re: New AGP Mobo with ULi 1695 Chipset = No more gfx accelration :(

My experience was this:

After fitting the new motherboard, my xorg.conf setting Option "NvAgp" "1" was ignored and the command:

"cat /proc/driver/nvidia/registry"

..listed NvAgp as being "3"

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

Was displaying "DISABLED"

I was previously using an ABIT KX-333 which has a Via chipset. This worked well with Option "NvAgp" "1"

I thought it was odd that the nVidia graphics driver had no "NvAgp" "1" support for the Uli north bridge (Uli being an nVidia company) so I gave up trying to use "NvAgp" "1" and tried to use agpgart instead, by compiling it directly into the kernel (not as a module). That was my mistake.

When that did not work, I posted here as a last resort.

I searched the web and found a web page (download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/ 1.0-8174/README/32bit_html/appendix-f.html) that says the nVidia Linux drivers only work with the linux kernel's "agpgart" when agpgart is compiled as a module.

I recompiled the kernel, including agpgart as a module and the Northbridge is now correctly detected.

So I apologise if I wasted anyone's time on this, and my question is, are there any plans to include support for Uli north bridges on Athlon 64 motherboards? I guess it is not necessary but maybe it would give a performance gain. I had higher frame rates using NvAgp 1 than using NvAgp 3 when I had my Via system.

Hi,

well even as module agp always worked for me... are you sure, that you did not a mistake with your kernel/xorg configuration?

Absolutely sure. I just replaced the motherboard. Linked into the kernel agpgart didn't detect the Uli chipset, then later as a module it did.
