NVIDIA GeForce 6800 feedback- Debian/Ubuntu

Hi,

Is anyone using geforce 6800 w/ 17" LCD display under Debian or Ubuntu? If so, are you happy w/ the output under linux?

Are you using built-in OS (debian/ubuntu) drivers or did you download driver off nvidia site? If so, can you point me to an URL for the correct nvidia linux driver for i386 architecture.

I'm looking at using Alienware laptop (MJ-12_m5700i) w/ 17 WideXGA LCD display. Alienware doesn't offer any linux support but I was wondering if anyone is using nvidia geforce 6800 & can offer any feedback?

thanks for your time!

also i didnt menchion it in the other thread, you need to apt-get the drivers while using ubuntu i386 v. although they auto install on the 64bit v.

Do know the driver name that I'll need to apt-get?

Also would I need reconfigure xserver to generate a new xorg.conf?

heres how you do it

open a command line and do:

Code:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-settings linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`
then

Code:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup
sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/NVIDIA-Settings.desktop

now add to what you just opened

Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=NVIDIA Settings
Comment=NVIDIA Settings
Exec=nvidia-settings
Icon=
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;System;

save it and then restart x (ctrl+alt+backspace)

and then you should be good

all 3d should work right from that (it does for me, q4, and several emulated games)
