Will the H.264 decoding have a linux driver?

Will the H.264 decoding have a linux driver? If so when?

Regards
Jim

forceware release 85 will support h.264 decoding in hardware. Will there be a linux driver for this release...

still nothing :/

I would be also really interested in such a feature :-)

And to have a full mpeg2 would also be very good...

and deinterlacing for all those...
Yes. Nvidia has good 2D and great 3D, when video part will be upgraded to such high level?

Re: Will the H.264 decoding have a linux driver?

And now I am really angry :fu:

I've downloaded a 720p HDTV video (4.4 GB of data, H.264 + DTS 5.1 sound).
All I get is this:
Code:

[00000353] ffmpeg decoder error: more than 5 seconds of late video -> dropping frame (computer too slow ?)
...I have P4 2,4 GHz. Now tell me how am I supposed to play this video under Linux w/o HW decompression?!

I tried to use mplayer instead of VLC. It is better but still unwatchable... video is extremely slow -> audio goes out of sync.

Re: Will the H.264 decoding have a linux driver?

I am thinking about putting together a linux box to run MythTV. I want it to support playback of 720p and 1080i resolution HDTV encoded in H.264 format. I want to minimize power consumption and fan noise, so I am looking for a video card with H.264 hardware support instead of relying on an ultrafast main CPU. The problem is, as of today (April 2 2007) I can find no video card that offers hardware support for this that works under Linux. This thread seems to be more than a year old but there is still no news, is that correct?

There are other more recent threads about this, but there is still no news. That is correct.
There probably won't soon be any news either. Someone from NVIDIA said that there are no plans to improve the XvMC support in the Linux driver (which is where this could be added in), and someone else said that when we want an H.264 decoder, we should go and write it ourselves in GLSL.

Re: Will the H.264 decoding have a linux driver?

There is a discussion on the xorg mailing list about an video acceleration api that uses hw features and/or glsl* to accelerate video decoding.

*would work on all cards which supports it

Re: Will the H.264 decoding have a linux driver?

That mailing list discussion is about yet another API for video. It does not automatically lead to a working implementation (although that Intel guy might write something for Intel devices).
I think the problem for now is not the API. We have APIs to choose from already.
The problem is to go from "you could write an H.264 decoder in GLSL" to a working and re-distributable decoder. That is not a project for a rainy sunday afternoon, as far as I understand.
Once that decoder is available, attaching it to an API or directly to a video player program is the trivial part.
The discussion also mentions that using GLSL would mean it can't work on very old cards (although I don't see the problem with that...) and that new cards apparently again implement the dedicated video decoding hardware that has been omitted in the previous generation. Which would mean you want to use that hardware, not the generic shader engine that GLSL would use.
