running nvidia kernel 7676 on linux 2.6.16

1 Attachment(s)
To any interested in running an older Nvidia kernel like 7676 on Linux 2.6.16 , here is a patch that allows to compile the 7676 kernel on it.

I needed that because the Go6600 is not correctly supported by the latest driver (8178) and the 7676 driver does not compile under 2.6.16 and nobody knows when the next one -supposed to compile under 2.6.16 and support the Go6600- will get out.

BTW, why isn't there any beta version of the Linux drivers as there is for Windows ?

Procedure is as usual:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run --extract-only
cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1
patch < NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-7676-linux2.6.16.diff.txt
./nvidia-installer -c

My 2 cents,

OS

I haven't yet tried this but thanks for doing it..

I'm running 7676 on five different LILO boot options and didn't want to have to upgrade ALL of them to 8178 just because a new kernel has been released. Especially when, with my ageing PCI GeForce4 MX 440, I'm very rarely receiving anything in the way of new features or enhanced stability with newer drivers.

I can confirm it compiles and creates a module but I have yet to fully 2.6.16-ise my system (kernel, alsa, nvidia, rt2500, lots of other out-of-kernel patches etc.) so I'll try to feedback later on whether it was a success or not.

Thanks for doing this, though.

I can now confirm that this patch does in fact work.

Do you have any idea if this patch will also work against the 7174 version of the legacy driver.

I'll try it tomorrow anyway when I have access to the machine.

I just wanted to note that this patch also works on the x86_64 driver. I've installed it on two i386 machines and an AMD64 and it works great. Until Nvidia can release fixes for the 8xxx series, this patch is a lifesaver. Thank-you, osmeest!

@nowatson: I tried this patch on the 7174, and tried fixing the compile failures, but didn't have any success. It was looking for some non-existant kernel symbol. Yes, the patch worked against 7676 on x86_64 for me too.

Any idea to run it on Fedora Core 5 ? (unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko')

I had to use
Code:

patch -p0 < NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-7676-linux2.6.16.diff.txt
to get it to patch at all, on a dapper drake, 2.6.15 kernel (does it even work on it? Who knows, I'll be trying that presently.... :scarey:)

nope, didn't work on 2.6.15-20-k7 :( Still can't play BF2 on dapper... damn kids with their 8-track tapes and their music and their television
