Support of new video cards for laptops? (Quadro FX go 350/1500/2500)

Hi folks.

Rumors tell that there's a new nvidia driver coming in a couple of weeks.
I'm in the process of buying a new laptop computer, and currently I'm in favor of the new Dell Precision M65 and M90. These laptops comes with Quadro FX Go 350 for the M65 and Quadro FX Go 1500 or 2500 for the M90.

As far as I can tell from documentation, these models are not supported by the current driver. Does anyone know whether these models will be supported by the upcoming release? Are there some resources for information like this, or Is my only hope that someone from nvidia reads this tread and answers this question?

I've looked into the nv driver code, and it seems like these models are added to xorg's source tree (without the "Go", don't now if that matters) and I'd be happy to run the nv driver until the nvidia driver supports the models if it's going to happen not very long from now. Does anyone know for certain whether the nv driver in xorg v7.0 (or cvs HEAD) really support these models?

I've looked up some technical info on the models, and the Go 350 has "only" 64 bit memory access, while the others have 256 bit. How much performance impact will this have? I'd like to run xgl, but I suppose I can do without. Seems like the Go 350 uses very little power, which is good for a laptop.

Regards,
The happy Salmon

I am ordering an M90 with the Quadro FX 2500M. I certainly hope there will be a driver out once I get it. By the way, the new cards do not have the "Go" in their name, but an "M" at the end (Quadro FX 350M, 1500M and 2500M). I'll be glad to share experiences with others who also have these card.

Cheers,

Stéphane

I noticed that the comprehensive list does not have the NVS 120M, but does list the 110M.
Is there an issue with the 120M?

The reason I ask is that I am considering a list of laptops, one of which includes the 120M:
Dell Lattitude D620 -- NVS 110M
Dell Lattitude D820 -- NVS 120M
Dell Precision M65 -- Quadro FX 350M
Sony FE/SZ -- 7400go
ASUS A8Jm -- 7600go (if it comes to U.S.)
Compal HGL -- 7600go (if it comes to U.S.)

I have one additional question though. I will be doing 3D opengl development in linux, with lots of
anti-aliased lines for debugging visualization (hence a quadro), but I will also be gaming in Windows. I have
not seen any concrete information on what exactly is different in a 350M from a 7400go. Will the
350M (or NVSs) be at least as good as a 7400go in a DX8/DX9 gaming scenario?

What would be nice is a rundown of the tradeoffs among all the 7300/7400 based cards (110M, 120M,
7300go, 7400go, FX 350M) with respect to opengl primitives (anti aliased lines and other CAD-like
support) and DirectX Windows gaming (pushing polys & textures).

However, the bottom line is I just want decent linux opengl support and good windows directx gaming
performance, and I'd like to be assured that the NVSs or Quadro FX 350M are not crippled in one
or other of these respects relative to the 7400go.

Also, does anyone know if there are any decent 7600go laptops available in the
U.S. at all?

OK, what's the final verdict? Is the Quadro FX 350M supported by the new driver or not? Are there users who have alreade got linux with glx, compiz etc. up and running with this card? If so, what are your experiences?

Tnx

I don't know.

I've ordered a Dell Precision M65 with an estimated delivery date of may 5. If you're interested, I'll post my findings here when I get the laptop.

OK thnx Salmon, my M65 is to be delivered on may 9... So, if I'm lucky the worst problems have been solved by you :)

I want to install SUSE 10.1 (and run XP in VMware). By the time of delivery they should have the final version of 10.1 released.

I have a Dell M90 with a Quadro 2500 and the new drivers work fine on FreeBSD.

I got my Precision M65 yesterday, and I can confirm that the new driver works out of the box with the Quadro FX 350M.

The only problem I know of yet is that switching to any of the consoles will give me a blank screen. I'll have to look into this tomorrow.

Performance is also good with Xgl, and glxgears (yes, I know.. not a benchmark) gives me 4870 fps.

Btw. I'm running Ubuntu Dapper.

Hi salmon,

could you post your xorg.conf file?

I install 1.0-8756 on my M90 under ubuntu breezy.

But the gdm won't start up, the error log say the screen config is not right.

thanks

Yaou
