8756 Driver fails - GLX wont load

Hello,
I just upgrade my kernel to 2.6.16.9 and installed current version of Nvidia driver 8756 under Kubuntu.

Now, X will not start unless I disable GLX.

Overall performance 2d is worse than before upgrading, and of course I cant run any openGL apps.

It appears as though I am running 6.8.2, according to this in the xorg log:

X Window System Version 6.8.2 (Ubuntu 6.8.2-77 20051010174523 root@vernadsky.bui ldd)
Release Date: 9 February 2005
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.8.2
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.10 i686 [ELF]
Current Operating System: Linux ubuntu 2.6.16.9 #1 Sun Apr 23 17:27:35 NZST 2006 i686

Can someone tell me what might be causing this issue?

Thanks

You have the glx module commented out in your xorg.conf.

Yes, that is the only way I can get X to start - or at least get anything on my display.

If I leave GLX in, I get a blank screen, and hitting a key takes me to a console login.

Thanks

We need the log of excactly when it's failing. Try running with glx enabled and copy your Xorg.0.log somewhere else and attach it here when you get into X again. Also I noticed that it switched between 7667 and 8756 a couple of time. Did you remove ALL nvidia related packages? (modules-restricted-* and nvidia*)

Oh, I see.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, after using apt-get to remove nvidia-*

I have attached the latest bug report log as a zip file, as it is now 107kb -7kb over the size limit for uploading.

GLX is not commented out, but does not load.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

In the latest bug report, you're using the 'nv' X driver, and not the nvidia X driver.

uhh, my bad. Forgot to change it back to Nvidia.

However, if I do that, with GLX *not* commented out, upon restart X will not start, and neither do I get a console login.

All I get is a screen that has the top half black and the bottom half white, and nothing else. The pc is completely locked up, a hard reset is required. I then have to boot from a live CD, so that I can edit the xorg.conf to either comment out GLX or change the driver to NV.

This is not a hardware fault (although I know it sounds like one) as the previous drivers 7667 (?) were working fine with GLX before the update.

All I've done is, on a working box, compile the 2.6.16.9 kernel, and then try to install the 8756 driver.

Is there a different process I can use to generate the info you need?

Thanks

Re: 8756 Driver fails - GLX wont load

Thus far, all you've posted are bug reports without glx, or without the nvidia X driver. I need to see a bug report that captures the failure. The bug report can be generated without X running.

Also, have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?

Thanks,
Lonni

Does that mean I can set the run level to 3 and run this report *without* having to start X (I thought the driver only loaded when X starts)?

Thanks

Re: 8756 Driver fails - GLX wont load

The driver doesn't need to be loaded to generate a bug report. Yes, you can boot to runlevel 3 immediately after a crash, and generate the bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni
