TFORCE 6100-939 video performance not what it _could_ be?

First, the hardware/linux flavor:
Gentoo x86_64 (up-to-date)
BIOSTAR TFORCE 6100-939
Athlon 3700+
2 GB OCZ RAM

Output of glxinfo | grep 'OpenGL ver' && uname -rmo:
OpenGL version string: 2.0.2 NVIDIA 87.56
2.6.15-gentoo-r7 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Now that that's established, I humbly submit my problem/query.

I got the nvidia drivers and sound (OSS) working and all that. I'm using, perhaps needless to say, the on-board Geforce 6100 chipset. Performance _works_, but perhaps it's not as speedy as it _could_ be? I've seen this problem _addressed_ elsewhere with similar on-board video chipsets, but never solved conclusively.
When I run glxgears, the best I can get is maybe 1000 FPS. Yes, I realize that glxgears isn't a reliable benchmark for whatever, but when I run, say, Half-Life 2 in Cedega, I can tell that it ain't too much better (if at all) than the Radeon 7500 I was using previously. The question is, what should I change to get better mileage out of this setup? What am I missing here?
Yes, I also know that if I wanted better performance I should buy an actual whole new (and current) graphics card, but, in the spirit of those of us who perhaps enjoy cheaping it out for a little while, is this signal path performing as expected, or have I butchered the configuration so far?

The relevant bits of my xorg.conf:
