GeForce Go 7400 on Sony VGN-SZ1VP/C laptop

Hi

I've recently installed Suse10.0 OSS on the Sony VGN-SZ1VP/C and all seems OK apart from the video card (Nvidia GeForce Go 7400) recognition.

I've downloaded the Nvidia Linux driver (1.0-8762) and followed the install instructions.

Unfortunately I've fallen on the first hurdle.

The Nvidia script tells me:

"You do not appear have an NVIDIA GPU supported by the 1.0-8762
NVIDIA Linux graphics driver installed in this system. For further
details, please see the appendix SUPPORTED NVIDIA GRAPHICS CHIPS in
the README available on the Linux driver download page at
www.nvidia.com."

The card is supported as stated in the documentation!!!

What can I do???

TIA for any advice.

I'm currently using a VESA driver but I want to use the NVIDIA driver because I want to run an external monitor with the laptop.

Please post the output from 'lspci' as well as the driver installer log.

Thanks,

Your lspci output shows the following GPU:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Note, that's an Intel GPU, not NVIDIA. If you truly have an NVIDIA GPU in your system, its not appearing on the PCI bus, which is either a BIOS or kernel bug.

Thanks,
Lonni

This Sony thing has two GPUs. Default is the Intel one (stamina mode). There is a switch to activate the Go 7400. From your lspci output, I guess you have to do that first.

Another interesting question is how you will manage to install both Intel and Nvidia drivers on this machine, because they clash (e.g. both have a version of /usr/lib/libGL.so). I'm curious.

Re: GeForce Go 7400 on Sony VGN-SZ1VP/C laptop

to install the nvidia drivers you must be in speed mode not stamina.

there is no problem installing both intel and nvidia driver, especially the intel as you can use the build-in xorg i810 driver

you can't use the same xorg.conf file though and you must reboot to switch video card

Re: GeForce Go 7400 on Sony VGN-SZ1VP/C laptop

I've got a similar type of configuration here.

My laptop is a TSUNAMI Speeder 259 Ultra, that is in fact, a Uniwill 259EN3 with hybrid VGA technology.

The only solution I've tought of (altough, I didn't tried it yet), is to dynamicaly link the files both drivers (Intel/NVidia) use, acording to the lspci output.

For example:

If the lspci output had a string saying "NVidia", then the /usr/lib/libGL.so would be a link to a file called /usr/lib/libGL.so.nvidia.

In the other hand, if no NVidia string was found on the output of lspci, the /usr/lib/libGL.so would point to /usr/lib/libGL.so.intel.

A shell script running when the system starts should do the trick.

What do you think?

By the way, does this happen also in windows, or does the system detect a new card automagicaly?
I never used windows on this machine, so i'm curious.

That it's a mess. :thumbdwn: That Nvidia shouldn't replace system libraries. And they also have their own implementation of the GLX extension (libglx.so) which also clashes with the standard one (libglx.a) if both are present, because .so takes precedence.

same in Windows, if you flip the button you get a prompt asking you to reboot.

I'm using the same laptop under windows with VMWARE as I get a much better battery life that way... like 3.5 hours vs 2.5hours at best under FC5

GOOD NEWS!!

i got all working (uniwill 259EN3 /// intel 945g and nvidia 6600go) both with GLX!! auto detected by a script at boot-up, which arranges the links to point to the wright libs and sets up the wright xorg.conf!!
LIKE A DREAM!!
just follow my how to here:
