Fedora 5 headache install

Hi All,

I am having problems getting the nVidia driver installed into Fedora 5 on my AMD 64

First, I followed the instructions here for Fedora:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490

then, I downloaded the right package, 1.0-8762

I ran it in INIT level 3 and went through the installer. It could not find a precompiled version for me, so it built one...WOOT it seemed to work successfully.

After restarting, I could not get x11 to start as the screen kept blinking black. Then I used ALT-CTRL-F1 to get to the INIT Level 3 login

I re-instated my backed xorg.conf in order to boot up

Now during start up I see this line:

Checking for vNvidia Kernel Module [FAILED]
nVidia.ko for 2.6.17-1.2157_FC5 kernal not found

I'm a bit new to linux, but not a complete idiot (well, you can be judge of that later) but I think I am missing something.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I have combed the threads but found nothing

Thanks
Andy

ADDED: I found the post for patching the 1.0-8762 installer, but what does it mean?

Code:

# sh /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8762-pkg2.run --extract-only
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8762-pkg2
# patch -p0 < /path/to/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8762-U062606.diff.txt
# ./nvidia-installer -n

I assume /path/to/ means I should magically know where it is? and there is no file anywhere I can find called NVIDIA_kernel ... some help in finding these locations would be great

i presume you downloaded the nvidia driver ? So the driver package name begins exactly with NVIDIA-Linux... - you have to know for yourself where you stored the download ;)

Hello:
You should probably do yourself a favour and use the rpm method as described here:http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...es.html#nVidia

I made a comment on this a few days ago.

The reason is that Fedora Core 5 changed it's location for the X drivers. You have to copy a few files into the correct location.

Move some files from /usr//X11 to /usr/lib/xorg.

You properbly only have to move a few files (like the driver and the opengl library and stuff).
More exact instructions are on the forum.

I would not recommending using the rpm method.

Re: Fedora 5 headache install

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules

or from an extracted pkg:

./nvidia-installer --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules

Hello:
Not sure what your reasons for that would be?
