Lockups running 1.0.8762 using Xorg 7.0

1 Attachment(s)
After buying a completely new system with a GeForce 7600 GS I've had nothing but trouble running OpenGL apps. The problem seems similar to the one posted many times before, to which I could not find a solution that works: After running for a while the screen becomes somewhat garbled and X locks up. When running in windowed mode the mouse pointer can still be moved.

I'm running a 2.6.17 kernel (Gentoo), Xorg 7.0 and nvidia drivers 1.0.8762

Dmesg gives me the following after recovering from a crash (from the latest crash). The soft lockup messages don't occur all the time, but I usually get those Xid lines.

Code:

I tried booting with noapic and/or acpi=off with no noticable difference.

Does anyone know how to resolve this, or even what those error messages mean? This problem has had me puzzled for several days now and I'm no closer to a solution.

Thank you in advance!

Re: Lockups running 1.0.8762 using Xorg 7.0

I have a few questions:
0) Does this reproduce with a kernel.org kernel?
1) Does this reproduce without the Coolbits option?
2) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?

Thanks,
Lonni

I'm now running a 2.6.17.6 kernel, however this doesn't seem to make a difference. I attached another bug report and my kernel config. Booting with noapic and/or acpi=off doesn't work on this kernel either.

Coolbits are now disabled, unfortunately this doesn't make a difference either.

My BIOS is flashed to the latest version.

Do you have any thoughts on what might be causing this?

I don't have any immediate ideas on what could be causing this. Does the problem persist with a non-SMP kernel?

What kind of motherboard are you using?

Unfortunately it does. Attached is yet another error report.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-8I945PL-G motherboard.

Maybe there's something else about my kernel that the driver doesn't like?

I'm not sure what else to suggest at this point. It seems that this might be a driver bug, however without being able to reproduce it here, the remaining options are extremely limited. I tried to locate your motherboard here, but we don't seem to have one.

Re: Lockups running 1.0.8762 using Xorg 7.0

Do you know if this problem can have anything to do with my card being overheated or simply faulty? I read somewhere that overheating cards can produce similar Xid lines.

Is there anything else I can do to further diagnose the problem? I would very much like to know what those Xid lines mean.

Finally it appears that this problem is not limited to OpenGL applications. When I leave X running it occasionaly locks up in a similar manner, only far less often. As you can see I'm quite desperate to find a solution :)

Re: Lockups running 1.0.8762 using Xorg 7.0

I don't see any indication that the instability is being caused by overheating.

Re: Lockups running 1.0.8762 using Xorg 7.0

To add to my troubles: I have the exact same problem in windows xp after upgrading to the latest Forceware drivers (other than that it is a clean install). After a couple of lockups I get a BSOD with the following information:

Code:

*** STOP: 0x000000EA (0x85E0D760, 0x864EC560, 0xF7A3ACBC, 0x00000001)

nv4_disp

Now I know this doesn't belong in this forum, but since the problem is related it might be of use. Other than that I don't care very much for stability in Windows :)
