Can't change resolution after NV driver 8762

1 Attachment(s)
I have just installed SUSE 10.1 on my computer. It dual boots with Windows Xp.
When I install the Nvidia driver 8762 I lose the ability to change screen resolution. The 3D is active and works fine and the native resolution of 1280*1024 on the Samsung Synmaster 192n with a Nvidia TI 4200. I have installed this driver several times now along with re-installing the OS from scratch. Before the driver is installed everything works fine. After the driver is installed the monitor reports that any resolution other than 1280 *1024 isn't supported.

Here is my Nvidia bug report.

Thanks for your help
P.S. I am new to the Linux world. Trying to break away from Bill G.

Re: Can't change resolution after NV driver 8762

According to your bug report, I see:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1280x1024"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1280x960"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1280x800"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1152x864"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1280x768"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1024x768"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1280x600"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1024x600"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "800x600"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "768x576"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "640x480"

You didn't say how you were trying to change modes, however if the display is reporting that nothing other than 1280x1024 works, then that isn't a driver problem, its a display problem.

It would be worthwhile to remove all the modelines in your xorg.conf, as they shouldn't normally be needed, and could potentially be incorrect.

Thanks,
Lonni

I am having a similar problem.

I have two (almost identical) computers. Both are running SLED 10 (Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop) with the 8762 Nvidia drivers. Both have Nvidia Quadro 380 graphics cards. However, one has a Samsung 210T flat panel display, with a native resolution of 1600x1200, and the other has a Samsung 240T flat panel display, with a native resolution of 1920x1200. Both monitors are connected via the DVI interface.

The computer with the 210T monitor (1600x1200) works flawlessly. All I did was download/install the nvidia drivers via Novell's gui, enable 3D desktop effects via Novell's gui, and live happily ever after.

The computer with the 240T monitor refuses to go above a resolution of 1280x1024 when using the current nvidia (closed source) driver. However, it is able to display a resolution of 1920x1200 just fine using the nv (open source) driver.

It is illustrative to compare the output in Xorg.0.log depending on whether the nv or nvidia driver is being used. I've attached both log files as well as my xorg.conf files.

Any advice on getting the 240T working with the nvidia driver would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dana

Thanks for your reply. It doesn't matter how I try to change resolution. Right on desktop or through SAX2 the results are the same. I did check the monitor setup via the hardware info and all the resolutions seem to be available. I will try your suggestion on the modelines.

Thanks Randy

Hello,
I have a similar problem but it's not the same diagnostic !
Since 8762, I can't have my usual 1280x1024 resolution with my LCD display.
It backs to standard 800x600.
I've try many stuff but finally I came back to nv driver.
It seems like the nvidia driver doesn't found any valid resolution.
Here is the NVIDIA bug report.
Thanks if you can achieve a solution as I don't want to came back to previous driver & kernel version !

Re: Can't change resolution after NV driver 8762

I've found the solution.
I've installed the legacy driver and it works well.
It seems strange as the Geforce 4 MX440 doesn't appeared as supported in the legacy driver README. But, indeed, it works, so ...

dwa:
In your X log, I see:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "UseEdidFreqs" "FALSE"

I'd be curious why you're setting those options, and whether the behavior differs without them? Additionally, please remove those options, start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log.

shadog1962:
I don't see any information here on which modes you're expecting to get. Please follow the same steps as I requested of dwa.

Thanks,
Lonni

These options were among a couple of random things I was shooting in the dark with. I've removed them, and the xorg.conf file we're now working with is exactly what sax2 automatically generated.

One more data point: An antique Redhat 9 installation with a very old (4496) nvidia (not nv) driver has been running on this machine for years at 1920x1200 without any problems, though I recall some pain getting it to work right when I first installed/configured it.

The SLED 10 installation is obviously new.

I changed the default runlevel to 3 and started X manually as described. The nvidia-bug-report.log file is attached.

Thanks for all your help,
Dana

Re: Can't change resolution after NV driver 8762

Here's the problem:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validating Mode "1920x1200":
(II) NVIDIA(0): 1920 x 1200 @ 52 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Source: EDID
(II) NVIDIA(0): Pixel Clock : 134.42 MHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): HRes, HSyncStart : 1920, 1954
(II) NVIDIA(0): HSyncEnd, HTotal : 2018, 2112
(II) NVIDIA(0): VRes, VSyncStart : 1200, 1201
(II) NVIDIA(0): VSyncEnd, VTotal : 1204, 1224
(II) NVIDIA(0): H/V Polarity : +/-
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode is rejected: Only 60 Hz VertRefresh modes are allowed
(WW) NVIDIA(0): for this TMDS encoder; this mode had VertRefresh 52.0 Hz.

You can try to workaround this by specifying the AllowNon60HzDFPModes parameter to the ModeValidation option. See the driver README for more information on this option.

Thanks,
Lonni

I added this option to xorg.conf, and everything now works perfectly. I can't thank you enough for getting this to work for me!

Thanks again,
Dana

Re: Can't change resolution after NV driver 8762

I would like to thank all those who have responded, I really appreciate the help.
I looked through some of the documentation I have. I noticed that the the TI4200 is a legacy card which according to what I read is no longer supported in the latest driver. So I followed "hermes42" suggestion and installed the 7182 driver and all is working fine now. I did have to change the monitor to a LCD 1280*1024 instead of the Samsung that was detected but this samsung didn't work right any way. I had to change it when I first installed SUSE 10.1.
The standard LCD selection works great.

Thanks again
Randy
