Howto Check SLI

Hi,

I installed 2x GeForce 7600 GT (both form ASUS and execat the same type) on my M2N32-SLI mainboard (Athlon 64 X2), and after a few trys I got SLI working.
Xorg.0.log:
--snip---
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "SLI" "on"
(**) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA SLI enabled; using auto-selected rendering method.
--snap---

looks good.

But I have no idea how to test it. I want to improve my World-of-Warcraft running with CEDEGA, but it has exact no ettect.
With only one card installed in my system I got about 40 FPS, with 2 cards and SLI enabled I got about 40 FPS, and the same happens with tuxracer etc. So I'd like to know howto use the advantage of SLI with Linux. Is there any possible test etc.

With the nvidia-settigs tool I am not able to find any information about SLI, e.g. the temperature of both GPU.

So that are my questions

Greetings

Robert

Re: Howto Check SLI

Sorry for the bump, but I'd be very interested in the response here... I just ordered an M2N32-SLI with two of the updated-chip 7900GTs and should receive in a couple days and will be going through exactly this.

Thanks,

Re: Howto Check SLI

Not all programs can take advantage of SLI. It depends a lot on how the program is written. There's an NV-CONTROL option called 'slihud' which shows a bar in OpenGL apps showing how the load is divided between BOTH GPUs. The option is only available in case of SLI (so using that you can already see if it is on) and it allows you to see how much SLI helps for this game.

I'm not sure if nvidia-settings supports this option else use nvclock which can set it for sure (you need 0.8 beta2 of nvclock).

Re: Howto Check SLI

Hi,

thanks for the hit with "'slihud' and nvclock. I think the real problem is the calculation of the FPS rate. I belive World of Warcraft with Cedega uses SLI. Here are my reasons for this opinion:
1. he bars show it (if I use the slihud option)
2. the temperature of both GPU's is increasing when playing WoW (a very well indicator ;) )

Here comes a short howto (nvidia linux and sli):
install a current driver from nvidia.com
for SMP-Systems use kernel-parameter pci=nommconf with grub/lilo
man nvidia-xconfig
nvidia-xconfig --sli=Auto --no-separate-x-screens --no-twinview
(try differnt -sli options "Auto', 'AFR', 'SFR', and 'SLIAA')
restart x-server (e.g. /etc/init.d/kdm stop && /etc/init.d/kdm start)
login
start nvidia-settings
activate "slihud" option in Open-GL settings
try a few 3D games or applications
Important: Post your results in this group :o

Re: Howto Check SLI

Using the bar you can see how much SLI helps this game. When there's only one videocard in the system the bar would be between 0-100% if there was a way to show it. The second card is barely used when the bar doesn't increase much. In theory you can get twice the speed of a single card in SLI but that's only in the case that both bars are at 100%.
