Can't get 1280x1024 on LCD

2 Attachment(s)
I just installed a new XFX 7600 GT XXX edition. It's a big improvement over the onboard Radeon Xpress 200 and the buggy fglrx driver.
Unfortunately, I can't get it to drive my LCD at it's native 1280x1024. It only goes up to 1024x768. With no modelines in xorg.conf, the log file says "No valid modes for "1280x1024"; removing." So, I added "Modeline "1280x1024_60" 108.88 1280 1360 1496 1712 1024 1025 1028 1060 -HSync +Vsync" from the output of gmt to the config file and changed the default mode to 1280x1024_60. Now the log says, "No valid modes for "1280x1024_60"; removing."
/usr/sbin/nvidia-xconfig -query-gpu-info correctly shows my monitor as 1280 x 1024.

Any suggestions?

Re: Can't get 1280x1024 on LCD

Have you tried requesting a 1280x1024 mode? If that fails to work, then please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate and post a new bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

Re: Can't get 1280x1024 on LCD

What do you mean by requesting a 1280x1024 mode?
Before adding the 1280x1024_60 modeline, I had Modes "1280x1024" in the screen section (actually, it was already there). After adding the modeline, I changed it to Modes 1280x1024_60.

I was referring to the Screen section.

Ok, unless I'm still misunderstanding you... I've already tried having no modelines and putting "1280x1024" in the Screen section.

Anyway, attatched is a bug report with -- -logverbose 6 in zip format. When it is not compressed it exceeds the forum 100kb limit.

Here are the problems:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Validating Mode "1280x1024_60":
(II) NVIDIA(0): 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Source: Custom ModeLine
(II) NVIDIA(0): Pixel Clock : 108.90 MHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): HRes, HSyncStart : 1280, 1360
(II) NVIDIA(0): HSyncEnd, HTotal : 1496, 1712
(II) NVIDIA(0): VRes, VSyncStart : 1024, 1025
(II) NVIDIA(0): VSyncEnd, VTotal : 1028, 1060
(II) NVIDIA(0): H/V Polarity : -/+
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode is rejected: PixelClock (108.9 MHz) too high for EDID
(WW) NVIDIA(0): (EDID Max: 108.0 MHz).

(II) NVIDIA(0): Validating Mode "1280x1024":
(II) NVIDIA(0): 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Source: EDID
(II) NVIDIA(0): Pixel Clock : 108.00 MHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): HRes, HSyncStart : 1280, 1328
(II) NVIDIA(0): HSyncEnd, HTotal : 1440, 1688
(II) NVIDIA(0): VRes, VSyncStart : 1024, 1025
(II) NVIDIA(0): VSyncEnd, VTotal : 1028, 1066
(II) NVIDIA(0): H/V Polarity : +/+
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode is rejected: HorizSync (64.0 kHz) out of range
(WW) NVIDIA(0): (31.000-63.000 kHz).

You should be able to just use a 1280x1024 mode by using the ModeValidation option with the NoHorizSyncCheck parameter. See the driver README for more details.

Thanks,
Lonni

Thanks for the prompt replies and help.
I got it working with the UseEDIDFreqs false, but your solution is a little more fine grained.
It's kind of odd that the monitor EDID information is not self consistent. It advertises a mode that doesn't fit in it's advertised frequency range.
