Asus P5B Instant Crash

Greetings,
Well someone has to be on the FreeBSD Desktop cutting edge I guess...

FreeBSD 6.1 Stable I386
Asus P5B Deluxe mother board/ 4GB memory
Asus EN7600GS Silent HTD/512 MB PCI-E
NVIDIA Drivers 1.0-8774 built from /ports
compat5x-i386-5.4.0.8_7

System is fine until I try and start X. It then immediately reboots so fast that there is no time for it to log anything in the Xorg logs. They are just zero length.

Nvidia-xconfig doesn't appear to be reading the card correctly either. Any ideas where to start debugging this in order to get at least past the instant crash and reboot ? Thanks.

Re: Asus P5B Instant Crash

But you are able to boot that motherboard into FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE without failure?

Re: Asus P5B Instant Crash

Yep, booted fine on the latest 6.1 Stable ISO. Works great and fast as a server, but that's not what I built it for. The sound board doesn't get detected correctly either, but I can live without that. I've never seen a system crash as fast as this one does when you try to start X with the nvidia driver though. I see a couple lines of the X startup, and then the screen goes black and I hear the reboot start. I can use the standard VGA driver and start X and KDE, so Xorg doesn't seem to be the issue.

Re: Asus P5B Instant Crash

Well, with a little hacking I managed to get this board working pretty well as a KDE desktop. I ended up using the generic NV module which I built from Xorg -current and then applied some patches that I found on an OpenSuse mailing list that added support for the 7600 GS PCI-E card:

http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-c.../msg00594.html

It's a 512mb card and I only seem to be picking up 256, but everything else is OK for now until I can figure out why the nvidia driver causes an instant crash on load.
