Visual artifacts on OpenGL intensive games

I purchased a Forsa GeForce 7900GTX ~1 month ago. Shortly after installing the card and firing up Sauerbraten or Tremulous I noticed that the polygons/triangles would start flashing on screen redraws, also random coloured spots would appear.

I have some screenies at http://users.tpg.com.au/adsl55l9/nv
nvidia-settings shows the card can sometimes get up around 60C and the hot season has just arrived. I've tried playing said game with different AA settings as well as changing the screen resolution but if at best that only delays the coloured spots a short time.

I've also noticed that sometime the KDE background gets all screwed up.

Restarting X or the system doesn't help. In most cases when I restart X the whole system will reboot :-(

I'm using nvidia-8774 and was also using the release before that which also showed the same problems.

Re: Visual artifacts on OpenGL intensive games
At first sight, this looks like it may be a hardware problem. Does lowering the memory clocks using the driver's Coolbits interface have any impact on the corruption?

Re: Visual artifacts on OpenGL intensive games
/me is currently investigating where and what Coolbits is.

Re: Visual artifacts on OpenGL intensive games

When I changed GPU from 650 to 551 the desktop when all screwy like I mentioned up above there. http://users.tpg.com.au/adsl55l9/nv/desktop.jpg So I played Sauer and Trem with those setttings and I was still getting all LSD-25 effects that I don't want. I also tried setting the GPU to 500 with no positive effect :-(

Currently the 3D settings are GPU: 500 Memory: 650

Re: Visual artifacts on OpenGL intensive games
My guess is your graphics card may be defective; I assume you don't have a Windows installation to check if the symptoms reproduce there, as well?
