I emerge gentoo's nvidia-drivers-1.0.9625, when I startx, I got a black screen.
seems hanging on "Initializing GLX externsion"

Do you have an eeprom.ko module loaded (lsmod | egrep eeprom) ? If so, unload it before trying to start X.

If that solves the problem then see the patch here for a fix.

Please try requesting a "1024x768_75_0" mode instead of "1024x768". If that doesn't help, please retest with 1.0-9626 and post a new bug report.

I have basically the same problem. I install 9625, setup the xorg.conf as usual. eeprom.ko isn't there, but I also tried it with the patch. I only get a black screen, although the system seems to be responding. If I switch to a console vt, the screen stays black but I can type in commands and even reboot nicely. I can see that the nvidia kernel module is loaded, Xorg and stuff are there. I tried different setups in xorg.conf like setting the detected devices, ignoring TV and CRT, etc, to no avail.

The previous versions of the driver will freeze my system, so I'm just sticking with the nv driver for the moment. No more eye candy for me! :(

startx -- -logverbose 5
and then generate and attach a new bug report.

I requested that you use "1024x768_75_0". According to your bug report, you're using "1280x1024_60_0".

According to your bug report, the EDID for the CRT isn't being detected:
(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0

Is this CRT connected directly to the graphics card with a VGA cable (and no intermediary devices or adapters)?

I knew you'd ask me that. The CRT is not connected. I have a toshiba satellite 1415-S173 with just its DFP.

I tried other options, like ConnectedDevices "DFP", IgnoreDevices "CRT,TV" to no avail.

A correction though: I can switch to the text console and it works fine. That's how I generated the bug report in first place. I appologize to have said the contrary.
