Which systems will be supported?
Terra Soft will initially launch YDL v5.0 with support for the Sony PS3. By the close of 2006, support for the former Apple PowerPC product line will be made available, with intent to provide both DVD and CD install images via YDL.net Enhanced and the public mirrors, while the shipping product will be available on DVD only.
For you linux heads out there, I think this is pretty cool news. :D

That may be true, but if one version comes with it, I'm sure it's not going to be hard to get others running on it. The most important part is probably that it should have a bootloader, so with a little knowledge it can probably run all kinds of stuff.

Hey guys, for those interested, I hope you can help out to get Flash 9 supported in YDL for the PS3.
Everything counts, please fill out this form to help Adobe get things moving.

Flash Player 9 for YDL 5.0 --Adobe needs to hear from you!

Yellow Dog Enthusiasts,

Flash Player 9 Beta is now available for Linux, but not for the Power
architecture. Fortunately, Adobe offers a 'feature request' form:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/...?name=wishform

I ask each and every one of you to submit your request for Flash for Yellow
Dog Linux in order to showcase the strength of our userbase with enthusiasm
for the forthcoming Sony Playstation 3.

I encourage you to complete the form as follows in order that we speak with a
single, simple voice making less complicated their support initiative.
Remember, the port itself is never the obstacle, rather the on-going
maintenance and support for any new platform:

This is a: Feature Request
Product name: Flash
Product Version: 9
Browser: FireFox
Web Server: Apache
App Server: Other
Database: MySQL
OS: Linux
OS version: YDL v5.0
Feature request: "Please make available the full suite
of Flash applications for Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 which
now suppots the Sony PlayStation 3 --thank you!"

Thank you for your enthusiasm and support!

Sincerely,
kai

I don't get it. Is this a mod for the PS3 or will the PS3 be shipping with a Linux kernel from Sony?

Tivo's aren't really locked down that bad. I've written several third party mods for them myself. In fact I would go so far as to say my name is somewhat commonly heard of in the tivo hacking scene. Personally I don't like the idea of the GPLv3, as it seems like it is just an attempt at anti-capitalism. Tivo could have just as easily used VxWorks instead of Linux if they wanted to, which has the benefit of having a smaller CPU/memory footprint. Even Linus Torvolds is opposed to GPLv3.

The only developers who seem to want it are those psycho commie bastards like Richard Stallman, except he hasn't even developed anything in a long time. Instead he just preaches software communism all day long, while somebody like Linus actually spends time improving software rather than preaching some bullcrap ideology.

And FWIW I haven't seen any desire for GPLv3 in the tivo hacking scene, and several big projects, such as, busybox specifically modify the terms of their code to exclude any derivative code from adopting GPLv3 terms.
