Driver 9629 Freezes when using 3d stuff

1 Attachment(s)
Hello
I have a problem with the "latest" drivers when I use 3d
in planeshift the game-engien (And the whole PC) freezes a while a after a while (20-60 sec) it starts working again, after a little while it freezes again.
dmesg gives me this output
[ 439.464575] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 00000002
[ 439.465325] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 29, L1 -> L0
[ 451.492206] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 00000002
[ 451.492749] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 29, L1 -> L0
[ 463.487852] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 00000002
[ 463.488395] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 29, L1 -> L0

PPRacer crashes the xsession leaving me at the login prompt again, with no dmesg messages.

I saw the same problem with older drivers (from Ubuntu Edgy), I saw the problem in numuros 3d applications and only then.
See:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/rss-glx/+bug/63918

For reference. (Ubuntu bugtracking system)

The latest driver makes PPRacer crash the whole xsession so I don't know if it has the problem with the latest divers. Planeshift hast the problem in all drivers I have tested.

Re: Driver 9629 Freezes when using 3d stuff

The PPRacer X crash is a known bug in 1.0-9629, and will be resolved in the next driver release.

Regarding the planeshift problem:
0) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?
1) If you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters, does that have any impact?
2) Have you tested with 1.0-9742 ?

Thanks,
Lonni

No, probably not since I never made an upgraded of it.
If there is a new my next problem will be how to install it from linux without a diskdrive to boot DOS from but that is another story :)

No, see log (How do you know if the setting was correct)

Ill try that, there seems to be something called envy in Ubuntu that seem to get the latest from Nvidia...

p.s.
Thanx for the fast awnsers.

Hello
I manage to upgrade to latest BIOS, by snatching an diskdrive from an old computer :)
But I still have the same problem

As for 9742 it will not install on my ubuntu system:
ERROR: Unable to determine the NVIDIA kernel module filename.

Ill try some more tomorrow as it start to get rather late here in Sweden.

Re: Driver 9629 Freezes when using 3d stuff

Try switching to using the bash shell (run 'bash') and then install 1.0-9742.

Thanks,
Lonni

@zzingo: You might want to have a quick look at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=79966

You can just type 'sudo bash' to get a bash shell as root.

Re: Driver 9629 Freezes when using 3d stuff

I executed it as root (ctrl+alt+F1) login:root
killed GDM while running.

Could it be some extra package that I don't have installed that I need, that is used by the script?

Re: Driver 9629 Freezes when using 3d stuff

I get this output in the console below the ncurses requesters

[: 896: ==: unexpected operator
make[1]: Makefile: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `Makefile'. Stop.
make: *** [print-module-filename] Error 2

I have to run to work now Ill try ant search the forums when Im back home later today, maybe there is a known solution for this already. Thanx everyone for the help so far.

Re: Driver 9629 Freezes when using 3d stuff

Use 'aptitude search nvidia' to check if you have any of the Ubuntu nvidia files installed - to use the latest drivers, you need to make sure these are removed.

Make sure you have 'linux-headers-generic' and 'xserver-xorg-dev' installed. There may be one or two other packages needed - not sure, as I seem to have had no problem with the setup I started off with :/

Re: Driver 9629 Freezes when using 3d stuff

zzingo,
That's a known Ubuntu specific bug which can be worked around by using the bash shell (run bash, then install the driver).

Thanks,
Lonni

Netllama:

The output is from using bash
e.g.
bash NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9742-pkg2.run

(But Ill try some more now that I'm home again)

Actually, I believe that you need to change the /bin/sh symlink so that it points to /bin/bash.
