X Server crash trying to run quake 4, neverwinter nights (9629 x86_64)

1 Attachment(s)
(I have also emailed a bug report to linux-bugs@nvidia.com.)

I have recently upgraded to Fedora Core 6 and the 9629 version (x86_64)
nvidia drivers.

When trying to run Quake 4 Linux, and also Neverwinter Nights, the
server crashes. With Fedora Core 5 and the 8774 driver, I was able to
play Quake 4 without any problems.

I run my display at 1920x1080p, and quake is set to use 1280x720. It crashes shortly after the mode switch (I never see any of the actual quake screens).

Attached (zipped) is the output of my X log (with logverbose 9).

This is a known bug (that has been discussed in several other threads on this forum) that is triggered by a specific type of mode change while using a DFP. It will be fixed in the next driver release.

Thanks. I did search the forum but gave up before seeing a matching report.

So... how do you fix it *now*?

Can we fix this by going back to an 8xxx release?

This bug was fixed in 1.0-9631 (released a few days ago).

Thanks. I was about to describe my workaround (put your display in the correct resolution before running q4), but it sounds like it's not necessary.

BTW, is there some way to sign up to receive notifications of new driver versions? Usually I'm only aware of updates when I manually check while upgrading my kernel.

When I downloaded 1.0-9631 from nvidia.com and ran the installer, what I actually got was 9629.

To be sure, I reverted back to 8774, and then downloaded your 9631 file again, and ran it. It installed 9629 again.

What's up with that?

[ edited with new information ]

I did some checking, and I've never downloaded 9629. However, I did run the 8774 installer with the auto-update option, which might well have put 9629 in place.

Shouldn't the 9631 installer overwrite that version though? I use the -a -q and --nogui options to make it faster. Do they imply anything that might have caused 9629 to get installed instead?

I'm going to try again later today, but let me know if there is something I should clean up first.
