Glxgears accelerating after switching to another tab

Something interesting is happening on my system:

I start glxgears from a kde-terminal which has several opened tabs. The fps count shows:

5883 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1176.478 FPS
5738 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1147.555 FPS
5866 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1173.144 FPS
5669 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1133.711 FPS
5893 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1178.452 FPS

As soon as I switch to another tab and back again, the counting rises about 50%:

8540 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1707.828 FPS
8523 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1704.564 FPS
8568 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1713.282 FPS
8553 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1710.548 FPS
8554 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1710.676 FPS

This behaviour repeatable! No other switching and no other activity causes this acceleration. It has to be a terminal with tabs.

My system consists of:

- AthlonXP 2600
- GeForce FX 5200
- Ubuntu Edgy
- Kernel 2.6.18.3
- NVidia 1.0-9629

Did I install the wrong driver?

You installed the correct driver. The behavior you see is normal and happens whenever you switch the focus from the glxgears window to another if you look at my output below you can see the difference where I switch the focus and then back again.

Code:

>$ glxgears
28043 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5606.772 FPS
28433 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5686.427 FPS
28418 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5683.562 FPS
28375 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5674.937 FPS
from
33236 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6647.150 FPS
36161 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7232.039 FPS
36195 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7238.954 FPS
36213 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7242.488 FPS
36022 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7204.363 FPS
33811 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6762.192 FPS
back
28394 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5678.775 FPS
28405 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5680.876 FPS
28330 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5665.960 FPS
28374 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5674.220 FPS
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

I would be very grateful.

I'm not aware of any small benchmarks for OpenGL, as to accurately & comprehensively benchmark OpenGL, you need to perform a wide variety of tests. A widely used OpenGL benchmark is Spec.org's ViewPerf. It is, however, not small.

Whow! What kind of system are you using? :)

5900 for the video card, AMD64 X2 3800+ for CPU and a gig of RAM but as far as I can tell the glxgears speed only really shows the memory bandwidth of the card. I used to have a 5200 in the machine and got just about mid 1000's for it put in the 5900 which has about 4x memory bandwidth the gears number went up ~ 4x doesn't matter if the machine is overclocked or not the same gears number.

Well there is quite nice benchmark it is called GLOBS.

http://globs.sourceforge.net

There was also a thread about this benchmark, unfortunately i can't find it :\

I wasn't providing that link to tell you that glxgears is not a benchmark. I was providing the link to show you why your numbers would be significantly different by switching tasks.

If you intended to make me jealous I can tell you that you succeeded... but only a little bit. :D
