nvidia 7950GT

Is the 7950GT supported in the latest Linux driver?

I searched around and saw a couple of posts about the 7950GT working under Linux so I would have assumed yes, but when I look through the list of supported chipsets in the readme only the 7950GX2 is listed: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...ppendix-a.html

I'm not a Linux user yet, but I plan to try it soon.

Re: nvidia 7950GT

They can have missed a card ID, I think it should work fine like any other Geforce 79xx card. Just try the drivers if there are issues return here.

Re: nvidia 7950GT

Yes, the 7950GT is fully supported. All currently released graphics cards are supported in released drivers.

Re: nvidia 7950GT

I can't get it to work. Forgive me, I'm an utter Linux newbie, so I'll need things simple.

Specifically, my card is a Gainward Bliss 7950GT Golden Sample Edition (512MB). The driver version is whichever is here: http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/10.2/

I followed these instructions: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_Driver_install_howto
and installed x11-video-nvidia and nvidia-gfx-kmp-default from http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/10.2/ using YaST but it didn't work.

I did some searching in the opensuse forums and found this:
http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=30735
saying that the kernel-source and gcc packages needed to be installed before the drivers. I installed them and updated the 2 nvidia packages (as the thread said to do) but still no go.

The /var/log/nvidia-installer.log file doesn't exist.
When I run lspci (as someone on the opensuse forums advised me to do) it lists my graphics card as this:
06:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0295 (rev a1)

People here have mentioned xorg.conf as being important - where do I find that?

in etc/X11/xorg.conf

it's your config file for you xorg server ,if this file is badly configured ,that's probably the case, you'll never get this 3d on...

What am I looking for in it?

Re: nvidia 7950GT

Just post your xorg.conf

Re: nvidia 7950GT

I got an 'invalid file' error when I tried to attach it to this thread, so I uploaded it to my webspace instead:

Re: nvidia 7950GT

Okay, this section is wrongly completed, normally ,you don't have tomodify this file ,because the nvidia installer asks you to do it for you ,and nearly all time it's good...But here is the error:

"Section "Device"
BoardName "Framebuffer Graphics"
BusID "6:0:0"
Driver "fbdev"
Identifier "Device[0]"
VendorName "VESA"
EndSection

replace boardname by yours on ,driver should be "nvidia",and the boardname sould be yours too!
here is mine xorg.conf ,with a nvidia MSI 7950GT 512 EZ ViVo Ed:
PLUS: verify your section extensions
