X Freeze with mplayer -vo xv

2 Attachment(s)
Hi,
After playing some particular video files with mplayer and using xv, the X server immediately freezes. It does not use any cpu, mplayer does not use any cpu, but the X server stops taking any input whatsoever. The only keys that the system responds to are the Magic-SysRq keys with which I can reboot the machine. Also, ssh into the machine works, but I am unable to generate a nvidia bug report using the script, since the script itself gets stuck at the point where it tries to
Code:

cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/cards/0
I had this noticed this problem earlier, but I did not have a video file with which I could reproduce this problem. However, mplayer invariably freezes X with the mpg file available at http://cored.org/prototype/iid/iid.mpg while using xvideo output. Using mplayer -vo x11 works fine.

The file generated by nvidia-bug-report.sh is attached (when not playing the video file). Also attached is the output of mplayer -msglevel 6, while playing the file using X11 as the video output driver. FYI, the output of the log file generated by nvidia-bug-report.sh when I use the xv driver is:
Code:

Does this problem persist if you're not using the Composite extension?
Does this problem persist if you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf ?

Thanks,
Lonni

I forgot to mention that. If I turn off Composite, mplayer -vo xv plays fine. I tested with some (rather all ;)) combinations of the two above parameters:
Composite On, NVAGP 0 or 3 : X Freezes
Composite Off, NVAGP 0 or 3 : No freeze (video plays fine).

Does this problem not reproduce with the 'nv' X driver with the Composite extension turned on?

The video works fine with mplayer -vo xv and the nv driver. A nvidia-bug-report.sh is attached (even though a lot of nvidia driver specific information might be missing).

I'm not able to reproduce this problem using the mpg that you referenced. At this point, it seems like its specific to your environment.

Re: X Freeze with mplayer -vo xv

I have the same problem. When playing an HD video stream with mplayer and -vo xv on an HDTV connected via DVI at 1080i resolution, the X server freezes. The problem did not happen when running at a lower resolution on a vga monitor (I don't know the resolution and the monitor is not available at this time).

The problem does not happen when running with -vo x11.

I can't get any insight from any of the traces. I have tried with Mythtv and I have the same behavior.

I am running on an AMD64 system with a GForce 6800 card. The driver is version 1.0.8776.

If this is specific to our environement, could someone help pinpointing what is causing the problem?

Thank you

Ianic Brisson
