Tllde key problem in ET

I've found a problem with the latest nvidia driver version 9746 (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run) in the game "Enemy Territory".

When I press the tilde key the console drops down but I can't type anything into it. All keys from that point on do not work, I can't even get out of the console and I have to <ctrl><alt><backspace> to kill X.

I know that it is a problem with the driver because when I downgrade to versions 9631 or even 9629, the console works perfectly. Nothing else is changed, just the driver.

I am using Ubuntu Edgy and my card is a brand new 6600gt.

I would really like to use the 9746 driver because the others have slight graphics glitches in ET.

Thanks, KEv :)

The ET console works fine here on 9746, although right now I'm using the nvidia x86_64 driver. ET is based on Q3A so you might want to trial it and see if the same thing happens, or for something different a UT. Running ET in a window might do something.

I downloaded and installed q3a, bit it complained about default.cfg being missing so I dumped it!

The thing is that with the older drivers, the console works fine.

Anyone have any similar problems or suggestions?

The Q3A linux demo can be got to work with manual kludging, the error message you got, I got, if I mixed Q3A demo / Q3A full version or their components.

Back to ET, it's strange you can walk around pressing the arrow keys (or wasd) but all keys die as soon as the console hits. I take it you are using the latest ET version, 2.60b?

Try to run et in console, and check the game logs... maybe this is somehow related to xorg?

I was running v6.06 when it happened, I have just upgraded to v6.06b and will try it again. I will also try the logging thing, but if it locks there is very little I can do unfortunately.

Re the q3a thing, I think I downloaded the wrong version, I was thinking it was the demo but obviously it wasn't. Another 30 meg download was just beyond me at the time.

I'll report back with the findings, thanks for the suggestions :).

[SOLVED] Tllde key problem in ET

WOOHOO! Seems that you were right "whig", I just installed the 9746 driver and ET 6.06b works perfectly, no console problem at all :).

It even works well with ETSwitch loaded.

Thanks for all the help.

I'll tell you what, changing driver versions is a BREEZE under Linux, try doing that with Windows :S.

And also a BIG thankyou to Nvidia for all the work and effort put into the Linux drivers, I and many others are extremely grateful. A very well written and comprehensive driver. I've been with Nvidia since the very beginning, my first ever 3d card was the original Riva TNT 16 meg from Creative Labs. Everyone else at the time was hailing 3dFX as THE card, but I read reviews and tech documents and decided to go with Nvidia. I haven't been let down yet.

Cool :) btw, the offical ET version number is displayed as soon as you bring up the console.... I suspect 6.06 means a 2006-06 release. And hey, the Mac guys have now got 2.60c - where's ours?
