black screen, system freeze - geforce 7300gs
 

Hi,

when I try to start X my monitor turns black and the system freezes so I have to restart the system using the reset button. The same xorg.conf works fine using the generic nv drivers.
Before I installed the gentoo os I tried to install WinXP Pro with the same effect during the driver installation.

During the freeze I get those messages in the system log:
Hardware:
GeForce 7300 GS
MSI Platinum 975x (recent bios)
Intel Core 2 Duo

System:
Linux 2.6.18-gentoo-r6 #12 SMP Fri Jan 26 21:53:19 GMT 2007 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Concerning to previous posts in this forum I added the following kernel parameter:
pci=nommconf

I have a few questions:
0) Have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS?
1) If you change vga=791 to vga=normal in your GRUB configuration (and reboot), does that have any impact?

Yes, I have the latest bios version(W7246 MS v7.2).
I tried using vga=normal and also without this parameter, with no effect.

Which motherboard are you using?
Does this problem persist with a more recent kernel?

I hava a MSI Platinum PowerUp Edition 975x;

I did not try a newer kernel, ... but soon we will now.

ok, i'm getting exactly the same behavior with kernel 2.6.19-gentoo-r4 #2 SMP.

The only difference is that I now need the pci=nommconf parameter to avoid a kernel panic.

Now it works!!! because of the air-circulation within the tower i mounted the video card on the second pci-x slot!
Mounted at the first X started, ....
